Just want to know your thoughts about their fight at UFC 79?
You ppl think the outcome woulda been different if it happen a couple years back?:dunno:

Chuck would always have Wanderlei's number, so it doesn't matter if it's the 04 Wandy or the 07 Wandy. Still, this fight would've been so much more interesting in 04.

The fight was, well, not that good. Chuck looked solid, but it was way too one-sided, and Wanderlei looked pretty damn terrible. Overrated mess.

I cant say i agree with you on this one...Silva has fought a lot in those three years ..almost double i think that liddell had and up in weight too against guys like fujita and cro cop.The fact is vanderlais lost some of his forward moving axe murderer agression in that time.Especially in his two knockouts against henderson and cro cop

I think the fight went the way I always thought the fight would. But it was still good to have a little closure when it came to ths fight. It just seemed as if it would never happen.

Fighting fights has nothing to do with Liddell beating Wanderlei, it's all about how they match-up, and Chuck's a nightmare match-up for someone like Wanderlei. Wanderlei likes to swing wildly and charge, while Liddell loves it when someone runs at him. Wanderlei's been fighting like that since forever, with a couple of solid performances, like the first fight with Mirko.

absolute nonsense
How so? Wanderlei was throwing wildly and was getting tagged constantly. I was impressed with Chuck in that fight, while Wanderlei looked like the guy who fought Mirko the second time and not the Wanderlei who fought Mirko the first time. You'd think that training with Tompkins, Wandy would be patient and stuff, but he wasn't.

I did like how Chuck used his takedowns. Most hated that, but that was great.

How come talking silva getting tagged but not liddell getting dropped .And he wasnt working with tompkins yet he was working with his own trainers still

I dont think Wanderlei would have beaten Chuck back in 04. He matches up poorly and would have had the same problems that he had when they faught at 79.

Damone, I think your being too critical of this fight. I dont think it was a great fight, but it was def a solid one. Both guys through bombs, it was fast paced, there were knockdowns, Chuck even went for TD's. It was pretty cool. But I will say its an overrated fight. It kind of reminds of me of teh GSP/BJ fight where people were saying it could be FOTY. I never really liked that fight that much and felt it was overrated. Same thing with this fight. Neither were great, but they were both solid.

If they wouldve fought in 04 in the UFC then Liddell would've won IMO. If Liddell would've made it to the finals of the MWGP in 03 then I think Wandy would've demolished him. I give Wandy credit, he fought a pretty good fight against Liddell, but lets face it, he was fighting in Liddell's turf where Liddell is comfortable and can use those weird angles (Chuck had a hard time in the ring against Overeem and Rampage). It had also been over a year since Wandy had a fight so Im sure that played a factor as well. If they fought again I feel Chuck would still win even thought my heart would be with Wandy. Chuck the has reach advantage, and the octagon experience. Hopefully Wandy will be comfortable in the cage next time. If there is a next time.

The same thing would happen 3 years ago. Plain and simple Wandi has no head movement. I am sure he planned on being aggressive against Chuck. That first jab that backed up Wandi in the cage the first time is when Chuck got in his head. Wandi that whole fight had shitty footwork and 0 head movement. Lets not forget Chuck is a huge LHW! Shogun is a crappy fighter and I am looking forward to Liddell disposing of him.(Just like Forrest did)

I think Silva could of put up a more exciting fight. I won't say better...not many people can take such hits to the face from Chuck like he did.

But I would have liked to see him get Chuck in the clinch and knee his face off. I wish he was more agressive like I know he can be, since I have seen a few of his pride fights.

I know it is easier said than done thou, as Chuck had a reach advantage and trying to get inside is dangerous when the guy you are fighting has knock out power in both hands.

Who's knows what goes through fighters minds when they fight for the first time in the UFC. They have to deal with the octagon, new rules, first time nerves etc.

I'm sure he will come back even stronger.

Honestly I thought if it happened back then chuck would have lit him up... when it did happen now i thought it would be good but wandy would squeak it out.. well Chuck won so what the hell do I know.. its so unpredictable.. when wandy pounds rampage.. shogun does to.. rampage pounds chuck.. and jardine kinda does to... but forrest beats shogun... then chuck beats wandy... ufc light heavy weight division is so interesting..

i don't get how some people can say the fight was very on sided. the only round where there was a clear winner was the third. wanderlei started the first round patient playing chucks game of the counter puncher, i think he did quite well, chuck looked a bit confused at times (especially when wanderlei ran back, only to drop bombs when chuck chased him). in the second round wanderlei turned it up a notch and had chuck in trouble a couple of times.

in fact, when the fight first happened, many people on the forum actually made the arguement that wanderlei won. it wasn't out of fanboyism either, they said it how they saw it.

i feel that the fight lived up to the hype perfectly. instead of getting an action packed 1st round ending with ko like we all expected, it was a 3 round war. i have replayed the fight so many times already, it'll surely become one of my all time favirote fights.

man the fight was like wandy saying hey chuck no matter how many strikes you throw at me you'll never knock me out. it was disappointing he was playing straight into chucks gameplan. If he were to play the turtle game and wait it out oh shit he would've demolished chuck liddel. The reason lidell lost to both jardine and rampage was that he was never used to being the aggressor in the fight and yet wanderlei wanting to gain fans in the process with the fight....lost..

Wanderlei has had this swing and miss style for years now. He got good at it and then thought he could solely rely on this verry simple aproach to fight. I love the guy but it seems he just doesnt want to win unless it's with 1 or 2 wild hooks. He could have beaten liddell if he wanted to.

Well first off Silva was juicing a few years back (or at least I believe he was) so he would have been much stronger than this time when he had to do it naturally. With both men being younger it might have been an even more aggressive fight. It's hard to speculate on things like this, I will only say that 3 years ago I believe we would have had a KO one way or the other, not a decision.

For the people who thought Wanderlei won that fight, you're an idiot. For the people saying Wanderlei could have won if he actually wanted to, you're an idiot. For the people saying Wanderlei lost because he was juicing in Pride, show proof or don't accuse. I like both fighter so I'm not biased towards either one. No one knows who would have won a few yrs ago that's why these type of threads are actually useless. It was a great war and both guys fought great wether people want to admit it or not because there was no KO or their guy didn't win. I'm looking forward to both of their next fights...

He had 3 prior fights in the UFC before fighting Chuck and for people who do not practice MMA, it is not like you can just come in and grab someones neck and clinch. Simply put, Wandi had no chance against Chuck with his 0% head movement. Chuck is a bad match up for Wandi~!

They both were solid, there was a little clinch, but liddell in it, elbowed silva a few good times and opend him up. If you look in their exchanged when liddell was going at him, he did catch liddell a few good times in that fight, just wasnt good enough to put Liddell down. Same thing with liddell, he nailed silva with some good shots too, but he didnt go down either, I liked that because that was the best fight of the year I think. But I beleive any other guy in the ring in that night would have went down with the puches that both of them threw. anyone agree with that?
