Davisty, I with you man, I love his old fights where he would stalk his opponents around, and shoot in and heft them on his shoulder and slam the hell out of them. I was really hoping he would do that today. Seems like he thinks he is a counter striker or something... I sure hope not. And even when he was on the ground, he was hardly trying to get Thiago to up against the cage, normally in half guard he can do some damage, but he wasn't doing much of anything. I really hope he comes out against Serra as his old self.
It was nice to see Thiago, first time I've watched him fight, dudes pretty good, seems strong as an ox too. If anyone can recommend some fights of his, I'd really appreciate it.

Thiago looked like a big MW, I hope Dana punishes him for not making weight, i lost a little respect for him being that far overweight.
If he was injured weeks before, he could told dana then that he cant make weight and to make it a catch weight fight, not at the weigh-in. Very disrespectful IMO.
It's disrespectful however Thiago had an injured ankle, so he couldn't run properly. This must have played a huge factor for him because he is someone that struggles to lose weight

Yeah i know, but why couldnt he tell dana sooner? They could of made it a catch weight earlier so Hughes wouldnt have to cut to 170.
Thiago must of weighed close to 190 for that fight he was huge.
Well he sure as hell didn't look like his ankle hurt. Dude looked like Jeff Monson.

riding the stationary bike isnt to hard on the ankles.. he has no excuses for not making weight.

But it is hard on the ankles nevertheless. He could have worsened the injury on the bike or any other type of running machine, which could have rendered him useless in the Matt Hughes fight, to the point where he may of not been able to fight
I would have done the same thing. He learned from his mistake after he couldn't make weight the last time (ages ago) and made weight on every occassion after that except for this one. I don't think it was lazyness or lack of motivation or disrespect
Some people are ragging on him way too much

Alves looked massive and that pisses me off even more about him not making weight. When he comes in that big I think he knew damn well he wasn't going to make weight and just wanted Hughes to keep cutting rather than have it at a catch weight so he had more of an advantage.
I wanted Alves to win, I bet on him in fact, but I want to see him pay for pulling that. I really hope Dana doesn't give him a title shot for at least one more fight. If I'm Dana I'd say "You don't get a title shot until you prove to me you can come in at 170. Not 174, not 171 but 170." Make him fight Kos or Sanchez and make 170 and win and THEN and only then start talking about a title shot.
As for Hughes...wow. He just looked slow, so slow at everything. He just hasn't adjusted enough for the fact that fighters are more skilled and much bigger now then when he was rolling through the division. So many of these WW's (GSP, Fitch, Kos, Alves) are just enormous and that makes it a lot tougher for a guy like Hughes who wants to get guys on the ground.
If he has any sense he'll beat Serra and then retire with some dignity still intact. If he keeps trying to work his way into title contention again then we are going to see a lot more losses for Hughes that look very similar to what happened today.
If theres someone who can beat GSP. it's Thiago Alves
I think that GSP is going to run through Jon Fitch, I really do. GSP is better in virtually every aspect of the game. It will take a miracle for Fitch to win; but hey, anything can happen.
Who GSP should be worrying about is Thiago Alves. Today, Thiago looked phenomenal. He was absolutely huge. I also pictured Hughes as being a big WW, but Alves was so much bigger. And people can say he was overweight but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt with his sprained ankle.
GSP has gone to wrestling mode as of late, today Alves showed great takedown defense. He was so strong and immediately got Hughes to half-guard. Hell he even neutralized Hughes when he was on the bottom. Hughes has some vicious GNP and Alves didn't get hurt one bit. It would be hard for St. Pierre to control Alves.
GSP has been "afraid" to strike as of late and Alves is an excellent striker. If St. Pierre got knocked out by Serra, he could get KOd by Alves.
Of course Alves is going to have to work more on his take-down defense, but Alves showed that he has the talent and the physical ability to be a major contender.
I'm probably going to catch a lot of heat from GSP fans, but I think Alves poises a legit threat to the title. I'm not saying he definitely beats St. Pierra but it wouldn't shock me 1 bit if he does.
