I think that GSP is going to run through Jon Fitch, I really do. GSP is better in virtually every aspect of the game. It will take a miracle for Fitch to win; but hey, anything can happen.
Who GSP should be worrying about is Thiago Alves. Today, Thiago looked phenomenal. He was absolutely huge. I also pictured Hughes as being a big WW, but Alves was so much bigger. And people can say he was overweight but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt with his sprained ankle.
GSP has gone to wrestling mode as of late, today Alves showed great takedown defense. He was so strong and immediately got Hughes to half-guard. Hell he even neutralized Hughes when he was on the bottom. Hughes has some vicious GNP and Alves didn't get hurt one bit. It would be hard for St. Pierre to control Alves.
GSP has been "afraid" to strike as of late and Alves is an excellent striker. If St. Pierre got knocked out by Serra, he could get KOd by Alves.
Of course Alves is going to have to work more on his take-down defense, but Alves showed that he has the talent and the physical ability to be a major contender.
I'm probably going to catch a lot of heat from GSP fans, but I think Alves poises a legit threat to the title. I'm not saying he definitely beats St. Pierra but it wouldn't shock me 1 bit if he does.
Thoughts on a possible Alves St. Pierre match?!?!
Don't worry we will get flamed by I agree with you bud

I honestly think GSP has better standup than Alves, he just isn't as willing to trade lately it seems.I know Alves looked good on his takedown defense, but if Hughes was able to take him down, so would St-Pierre. Difference is GSP would not have let Alves get back up.
But you are right, Alves seemed great today and GSP SHOULD be worried, and should keep his training up.
It was pretty sad to watch this fight and see how far Hughes has fallen, all he did was shoot in for takedowns and I don't recall him throwing a single punch or kick when they were standing. It reminded me of his fight against Royce Gracie where we saw Royce get taken apart and shown as a limited one dimensional fighter. I don't know what Hughes was thinking standing in southpaw and just shooting in time & time again with no setup, it failed miserably against GSP and it didn't work any better against Alves.
But it is hard on the ankles nevertheless. He could have worsened the injury on the bike or any other type of running machine, which could have rendered him useless in the Matt Hughes fight, to the point where he may of not been able to fight
I would have done the same thing. He learned from his mistake after he couldn't make weight the last time (ages ago) and made weight on every occassion after that except for this one. I don't think it was lazyness or lack of motivation or disrespect
Some people are ragging on him way too much
Maybe I am, but I thought hughes was a huge WW, alves looked like a huge MW compared to hughes. 4 pounds is alot and if he was injured and knew he couldint make the weight he shoulda let dana know ahead of time.
I had alot of repect for him after alves/karo and I'd have even more if he fought hughes the way he did if he weighed 170 not 174. he woulda and shoulda been fighting GSP for the title next, now he gets to fight compitition a step back.
I think he does have the best shot at beating GSP besides BJ ofcourse.
I still firmly believe that if Hughes can take a figher down. That fighter is gonna have a hell of a time with GSP. Hughes is done, he doesn't have the killer instinct he used to have and since GSP dominated him twice, other fighters aren't nearly as intimidated by him as they used to be. Back to the original point, if Hughes can get you down and pass to half-guard, be very wary of what GSP would do to you. Alves looked good and anybody can beat anybody, but GSP takes it most of the time.
dam i wanted Hughes to win, hopefully he's not seriously injured.
is it really that big of an advantage if Alves is 4lbs heavier for the fight? enlighten me
Don't forget not making weight could also mean the fighter didn't train as hard for the fight as they could have so it's not always a signal of an advantage. Not making weight could be a sign a fighter doesn't have mental discipline. If a guy can't say no to a cupcake or put that extra effort in at the gym, I'd say he's also more likely to give in to weakness when faced with adversity during a fight. If not making weight is due to physical injury like Thiago said, it could mean he doesn't have the cardio and would gas if the fight went long.
It's not always about weight either. Jardine probably had a good 10-15lbs over Wanderlei, didn't help him at all.
That style that everybody loves don't work no more! How is Tito doing?? That was an effective style when the TDD was weak to midline. NOw alot of the TDD is top notch.
You need to be good in all areas not just 2/3 or 1.5/3.
