Unfortunately I have to agree with you here.

Why did UFC implement referee stoppages on the first place?

i think the main point was the safety of the fighters, sure...Vera wasn't trying to get out of the position, but he was never in actual trouble, never rocked. Sure he was in the worst of positions and Werdum had all the chances to deliver damage worthy of causing a ref stoppage...but he didn't, was he trying? sure, but Vera was weathering the storm.

If you look at most stoppages, they just go fetal because they just want out of the fight, either that or the have been rocked and can't find anything else to do, Vera was never hurt and he was clearly intelligently defending himself, it wasnt it the most effective of defenses but it was working and was implemented by a clear minded individual.

All in all, horrible call by the ref, should've waited for a defining shot to actually have a case.

The refs are not employed under the UFC and the UFC does not make the rules for the refs. They are employed and follow the rules of the Athletic Commission.

That's a warrior, willing to lay his life on the line. I've had Marines that have laid their lives on the line for the man next to him, and for their family and country. That's a warrior. The guy who goes into some athletic contest who has no war experience, in my eyes, really has no right to call himself that. That's a coveted thing to call someone, and that's what I call my Marines. Those are warriors." - Brian Stann

i know that, it's just a saying...

UFC used to have no stoppages, sure they how have them because they are legalized under the athletic comision but the point is still valid, Stoppages in Unified-MMA rules or however they are called where implemented to protect the fighters, and Brandon didn't need protection in his fight....yet.

vera could've easily got away with the round, and it was stopped way to early when vera just turned his back. Though im not gonna argue with the early stoppage. If it was longer than a minute or so vera would have been decimated but i feel the ref shouldve of let them go to the second round.

My thoughts....

The fight was definetly stopped too early - he was in some ways clever to say "I understand why Fabricio doesn't want to fight me again." because it can set up the rematch now a little animosity might build up - which obviously makes a more interesting fight. Doubt he did that on purpose and was proberly being cocky (which i hate fighters doing) but yeahh - deffo stopped too early

Meh, I don't care to see a rematch.

This just makes me like Vera much less...although I wouldn't
have minded seeing the fight go longer and watch him get
punished.

It's like the mature fighters say: 'It was a bad decision by
the judges, but I shouldn't have let it go to the judges scorecards'

Maybe it was a LITTLE bit early of a call (I don't think so),
but he shouldn't have let Werdum get the FULL mount.

pwnd.
