What were the chances of Vera getting out of Werdum's black belt mount? Very slim considering Werdum is a much larger man that Vera and just because you're covering up doesn't mean you're intelligently defending yourself. Vera did nothing to improve his position. The stoppage was very justified.

Ref's are told not to take the time into account so Flak no offense but your point isn't valid. If he was trying to ride out the round and take damage thats fine but if a ref thinks he needs to step in that is the risk you take when you decided to lie on your back and cover up.

Now if there were more than 15 seconds left fine....but with that amount of time left, unless Vera was taking some real damage, he should have let him ride it out.....because thats exactly what he was doing.
Whether there's 15 seconds on the clock or 4:30 on the clock, it shouldn't matter. I don't think referees should think about that because if they did, they are greatly favoring a fighter.

If a fight should be stopped, it should be stopped regardless of how much time is on the clock.

Agreed it's not the best tactic, as he must have known by covering up and rolling with the punches the ref could have misinterpreted the situation. I just would have liked to have seen that fight continue as both men were more than capable of going to a second round.

I don't like stoppages where the guy who is stopped isn't at all damaged, even if it is "technically" justified. In real world terms, i think the stoppage sucked.

I didn't like the stoppage either Flak but Vera shouldn't be complaining about it. If he was bucking and trying to escape than I would say he might have had a point but he wasn't even trying to escape.

Also if we look at it in real world terms there would be no rounds so Vera would be stuck mounted by Werdum.

I understand Vera being frustrated with the stoppage but really, Vera doesn't have too much to complain about. He was mounted by Werdum and was getting punched in the face. He obviously had no answer so that's really his fault. Who can he blame? He may have not taken significant damage but when he can't defend himself, it's over.

This is why I really really miss Big John, no he wasn't perfect all the time, but he seemed to have an innate ability to use his own experience of reffing fights and knowing most of the fighters in the octagon to know when someone was in serious danger or if the damage being taken was not that bad to make the call of stopping the fight. The Liddell-Jackson 2 fight comes to mind- Chuck goes down but John waits and it's only when Chuck goes limp does he stop the fight- he granted Chuck the 5-10 secs to see if he could recover before stopping it. Werdum gets mount and hits the first shot at 00:32 and ends it at 00:20- I think he should have let it continue.

Quite honestly I'm not pissed off or greatly upset over this- I wanted Werdum to win this but I'd rather see the fighters continue before the ref jumps in too quickly. I don't want to see someone bludgeoned into oblivion but I don't think that was the case at all in this fight.

d3nnis has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Give Werdum credit instead. The ref took the decision right. I mean yes it can be discussed but IMO it was nothing wrong.

The problem with this is that we, as the fans, want to see a convincing win.

While we want to see a convincing fight, we really can't ignore the rules.

The reality is Werdum mounted Vera, started punching him in the face, while Vera wasn't hurt, he was clearly not defending himself properly.

The stoppage was fine, Vera was eating shots and doing nothing except covering up. He was going to continue eating punches.

Vera's trying to pull a Ken Shamrock and come off like the fight was stopped too early, when it really was stopped at the right time.
