So it's ok to let a guy lie on his back and just ride out a round? If he isn't going to be able to escape a position the ref can't take the time into account so you are saying he should let Brandon lie there until he gets hurt?

Yeah, why not. How does the ref know that he couldn't get out anyway. Is a fight over because of what could potentially happen. If that is the case then Dean Lister loses a fight as soon as the bell rings because his stand-up has got to be the worst in MMA. Maybe Rani Yahya. A fight ends when a fighter is not intelligently defending himself or gets stopped physically. Using those categories this particular fight should not have been stopped. Right?

The time doesn't matter. However most of Werdum's shots were not landing flush. I agree with big John that the fight shouldn't have been stopped. For those saying what does his opinion matter, can you remember Big John having a bad stoppage? Dan Margliotta is simply has had a bad few weeks. Maybe he's a bad ref, but maybe he's just made a few mistakes. We'll see. I don't think it matters if Werdum doesn't want a rematch. In the UFC the company can make him fight Vera again. Also Vera was a little delusional about winning the round.

You are absolutely right that a ref shouldnt take time into account, but a fighter can. And Vera chose to take as little damage as possible by covering up rather than trying to strike back.

And yes the ref should let him lie there until he gets hurt...of course. Your saying Werdum shouldnt have to do damage he should just mount and then immediately get the win?

im guessing this stoppage was a result of the end of round 2 of the kimbo JT fight. he was probably told he cant let a guy get beat on for that long and ride the round out and not stop the fight but he jumped the gun abit on this fight

No but I'm saying that Vera should intellgently defend himself and not just lie there covering up. That's not a defense. If a fighter isn't defending himself it's up to the ref to stop the fight. I would've liked him to let it go longer but if lying there was Vera's plan which he said it than it should've been stopped soon anyway. It was a slightly early stoppage but not a horrible one.

What would constitute intelligently defending yourself though?

Trying to strike back? That opens yourself up to open shots to the face
Trying to buck out? Vera said he knew Werdum's mount was too good to buck out of so it would be wasted energy
Trying to roll and create head movement so as to cause punches to miss? He did that
Covering your face so no clean shots get through? He did that

Intellgently defending yourself would be trying to buck even if Werdum's mount is to good you have to do something to make yourself look active. Lying there covering up isn't intellgently defending.

Attempting to wrap Werdum up would be intellegent defence. Planning on having him beat on you till the end of the round isn't intellgent defence.
