Intellgently defending yourself would be trying to buck even if Werdum's mount is to good you have to do something to make yourself look active. Lying there covering up isn't intellgently defending.
Attempting to wrap Werdum up would be intellegent defence. Planning on having him beat on you till the end of the round isn't intellgent defence.

I dont understand everyone saying he wasnt defending himself though. He said himself in the press conference he knew he wasnt getting out of mount but he knew the round was coming to a close so since he wasnt taking damage he figured he would protect and wait out the round..

Vera consciously chose not to defend himself because he knew he could wait out the round.
Waiting is how fighters get seriously hurt, even with only a few seconds left. If you aren't working to better your position, you aren't showing the ref that you want to fight, you're showing the ref that you want to go back to your corner and get a drink of water.

I agree that it was an asswhupping, but I still think that Miragliotta should have waited until seeing that Vera had sustained damage to the head.
That said, it's true he wasn't defending himself intelligently. He should have been given a bit more time to show what that he knew how.

Vera is a crybaby, he said he was winning the 1st round until the stoppage, that guy is delusional. He always blames his loses on someone and gives his opponents no credit. I would have liked the ref to let the fight continue until Vera was a bloody mess so I didn't have to hear his excuses afterwards.
