j, there's a difference between waiting and defending yourself.
Vera consciously chose not to defend himself because he knew he could wait out the round.
Waiting is how fighters get seriously hurt, even with only a few seconds left. If you aren't working to better your position, you aren't showing the ref that you want to fight, you're showing the ref that you want to go back to your corner and get a drink of water.
He was defending himself. I think you're confusing offense and defense- he certainly wasn't offering any offense, but he WAS defending himself. A fight shouldn't be stopped just because someone is catching punches and covering as a defense, that's all you can do until you have an opportunity to escape. It should be stopped when the guy is no longer catching punches and is just covering blindly for a sustained period of time.

Covering up isn't intellegent defence. You have to do something to protect yourself and he didn't he covered up and wasn't trying to escape mount.
I agree. I can put my hands in front of my face and try and guess where you are going to throw punches at me, eating some and blocking some, but I'm not intelligently defending myself.
However, Vera didn't eat that many punches that it couldn't have gone on a little longer. Let him eat a solid punch that gets a visible reaction from him, like a grimace of pain or head snapping back through impact, and then stop it.
I can't get mad at the ref for it, but the time in which he stopped it left far too much for speculation. Now Vera is bitching about an early stoppage and Werdum's win is slightly tainted.

Alright, guess me and Big John will just have to agree to disagree with you

Big John said he stopped it early he didn't say that he was intellgently defending himself. I think it should've gone a little longer but it didn't and it wasn't a horrible call.

Big John does say that he thought Vera was intelligently defending himself...

can someone define intelligently defending?
To me its understanding whats happening and moving/
the taking of the most minimal damage possible for the situation.
Can you intelligently defend yourself and still get TKO'ed? One would think that if damage was inflicted to a point, you'd lose the capacity for defending yourself intelligently.
Talking to the ref is definitely a sign your about yourself, and I would almost argue (and i am a huge vera fan) that riding out the round in the mount was not only intelligent as it saved energy vs. bucking...but it was going to improve his position 15 seconds later.

There is just litte that is more intelligent then what Vera did given the situation. He bucked once or twice at the beginning of the mount and Werdum almost didnt move. He blocked easily the majority of the shots and was not rocked at all. There is no way I can agree with that stoppage because the only argument is that "Werdum could have done this or could have done that". If that is the case, when did we start stopping the fights based on possible occurrences and not what actually did just happen?
