I don't even know anymore. Everything i've thought the announcement was supposed to be has been denied.
I agree that it paints dana as opening his mouth before he should have. If this was indeed the announcement then Dana shouldn't have said anything about an announcement until he knew for sure. I know they thought the vote would easily pass but obviously it didn't go like they thought.
While the news sounds pretty bad I read in another article that someone set it up so that they would revote next week and not all of the 20 members were there. I think the article also said that they revoted and something passed
11 - 9. I'll try to find the article. Hopefully someone clears everything up so we know what's going on because there really is no reason that mma shouldn't be sanctioned in NY.
I think the main problem with this whole sanctioning thing is that the UFC's lobbyists only focused on educating the top guy in the assembly. They put everything on him to inform the other members of what mma was and he failed to do that. They should have taken their time and informed all of the assembly members and made sure they knew it wasn't just 2 guys beating the hell out of each other for no reason. One member was quoted as asking if there was even a ref in the cage during the match and another compared it to cockfighting so it's obvious they weren't educated on the sport. They need to make sure all of the members understand that the sport has rules and stuff to make it safe and they also need to base their vote on their own decisions and not on the decision of one person because it was reported that one guy said it was bad and they should vote against it so the rest of the members voted with him.
Edit:
Here's one of the articles I was talking about. I bolded the important part.
Quote:
The legalization of mixed martial arts in the state of New York has not been decided yet according to representatives in New York State Assemblyman Steve Englebright’s office as confirmed to MMAWeekly.com today.
Reports surfaced earlier on Wednesday that the Tourism, Arts, and Sports Development committee had voted down the bill introduced to them that would sanction the sport of MMA in the state of New York, but according the latest news, the vote will be laid aside until next week.
According to the representatives in Assemblyman Englebright’s office, there were members of the committee who were undecided in their final vote for the bill and because of timing and other committee members who were not present during this process, they decided to push back the final vote until next week.
The sanctioning of MMA in New York has been a major endeavor of promotions all over the U.S., with the efforts being spearheaded by the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The vote will take place next week during the committee’s next official meeting.

I can't find where I read the passing of something by an 11-9 vote so that part may not be true but I swear I read it somewhere.
