My respect for BJ Penn keeps growing and growing. This was a perfectly good excuse for losing that fight and he never mentioned it. IMO he probably wouldve won that fight. Whether Matt wins in Dec. i definatly think we should see Hughes/Penn 2 down the road. Im afraid Dana knows the reality that Penn is the better fight and may protect Matt by preventing the rubber match.

IMHO, Penn is the kryptonite to Hughes...
Hughes' game plan time and time again is the same ol, same ol'...
(1)Takedown
(2)pass guard
(3)ground and pound
You take that away from him and he is lost.
Penn is a master of defeating the takedown... his balance is unmatched.
Anyone who attempts to pass his guard will find themselves submitted... period.
Should you manage to get through those 2, then Penn is done... but pretty much any fighter is done at that point... which is why Hughes is where he is.
Hughes' attack strategy is tried, tested and true.... but Penn is his worst nightmare.
Penn can be defeated in the standup game, but NOT by Hughes, that is not what Hughes does.
Be that as it may, Penn lost to Hughes fair and square.
Im a big Penn fan and I dont like Hughes because he is simply boring to watch (same ol' stuff over and over again).
But Hughes won... no excuses... injuries during a match are all part of the fight... self inflicted or infliclicted by the opponent... its all part of it.
It is very interesting information about his injury... it makes sense that being the case... but Hughes still beat him fair and square.... just not in the manner I thought he lost to him....

I completely agree attention. I understand injuries are part of a fight, but I still think people need to look at it when they make their opinion about a fight. Anyone who knows about this fight or anyone that has watched it or will in the future need to know that BJ injured himself in this fight, because you can't really tell just by watching it. I thinks it's important that they don't take anything away from BJ for "losing" this fight. A lot of newer fans just base their opinions by who wins the fight. Their are a shitload of fights out there that even though someone technically won, you can't say there was a loser. Griffin/Bonnar is an example and so is Griffin/Ortiz. Hughes/Penn 2 I would say should be no winner and no loser. Penn put on a clinic in the first 2 rounds, and Hughes put on a clinic in the 3rd and it was enough to finish the fight even. So both guys IMO kinda cancelled each other out...I don't know if that makes sense to anyone but I'm kinda little bit high right now...

I heard rumors of this being the reason he was so out of it in the 3rd round. I also heard a lot of people saying (and still saying) that it's no excuse, pain is part of the game.
Well, it may not be an excuse - but it is a REASON for why he lost the fight. Sure, pain is part of the sport, but sometimes overcoming pain isn't enough - if you hurt your body in such a way that it just doesn't FUNCTION properly, you're screwed - even if you ignore all the pain you're in. If it won't work - it just won't work.
Anyone who has had an injury to their ribs (I have on three occasions) knows that there's often NOTHING you can do to resolve that problem. Breathing, movement, and strength are gone. Pain or not, you're in deep shit.
That aside, I was REALLY impressed with Penn in rounds 1 and 2. He was picking Hughes apart and doing a fantastic job sprawling and working on the ground... extend the 2nd round by 30 seconds (or less) and that match would have been Penn's. Kudos for him for sticking it out in 3 even though he was hurt.
Hughes could have been a little less arrogant afterwards... And is it just me, or did Dana White look like he was ready to sodomize him? Man that was one happy guy after that fight.

Anyone who was there saw him almost CRAWL back after 2, we knew something was wrong. It was pretty obvious he didn't gas.
But I guess on the PPV they didn't show that so it was harder to tell why he looked so bad.

Great post and yes I noticed Dana licking the underside of Matt's sweaty ballsack as well. It was totally scripted and completely retarded. He should have been saying that shit to Penn, Hughes may have been the first to stop Penn, but it wasn't like he completely dominated him like Dana made it seem like. Dana just seems way too overly and suspiciously biased towards the Militage fighters.

I know!!!!
I think Dana's words were "I've never seen anything like you in my life" to Hughes..... Even though Matt Hughes had just gotten beat up for 10 minutes

Yea what did he say? "I guess he just couldn't keep up with my POWER" Holy shit how cocky and arrogant can you be? I mean he's great and all but that was out of line completely and extremely false.
