How important is it for a UFC champion to speak fleunt english? Before his fight with Dan Christianson, Frank Mir said that it is very important because the UFC champion is an ambassador of the company (he said this referring to Andrei Arloveski). You have to go out there and give interviews and try to sell the product. Listen to what Frank Mir has to say!

UFC® : Ultimate Fighting Championship®

The question here is if Frank Mir is right! Is it important for the UFC champion to speak fleunt english? If so, where does that leave Anderson Silva? Your thoughts!

Anderson will use a translator. It isn't such a big deal...

It is only important to the people who don't respect other countries. The ways of thinking that it is still "us versus them" is ancient. Sure I have a little more pride when the champ is American, but I understand that sports is not the real world. There isnt any affirmative action. All of these jobs(title-holders) can not be performed by just anyone. It should always be the best man for the job.

I think its extremely important in the United States. The US is a "melting pot" of cultures. No one cares if your back ground family history is from Poland, Brazil, the north pole. If you can speak english they can identify with you.
I think its important for the fighter to be able to speak the native language of the country his industry is based in. You must remember that this is above all part of the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY. Its all about marketing, speaking with your fans is very important.

Im not saying this to bash Sliva. Im saying this because above all in the US I feel this is important. The title holders are the stars. The stars are what draws people in. The people want to be able to speak and indentify with the star fighters. You cant do that through a translater, at least not as well.

What a f**king joke...a real MMA fan wants to see the best man win. No one who is passionate about the sport and truly loves it would give a shit about whether or not it appeals to the dumb ass ******* American fan.

The UFC is becoming more embarrassing everyday

Greed kills everything.

That attitude is the reason that UFC fighters could never compete in on a world stage...they aren't true champions, they're careers are manufactured and their records engineered...

"Oh lets make sure our title holders are good looking all american country boys so are imbecilic fans will relate to them"

it's not the champ's job to go market the company... its the marketing team, the creative team and dana himself. the UFC champ's aren't supposed to be anything like that. all they are supposed to be, is champ. if you're looking for a champ who is a charismatic american, then you're obviously not looking for the best man possible for your champ, only for a marketable tool!

sillyness...

wow you just said a lot of nothing!

I like when a fighter can speak the same language I do and you can actually understand them. I feel like the best man should win, and don't care if they can speak english well or not. I can't stand to hear GSP talk, but if he wins, then congrats. Silva deserves what he has, no matter how well he speaks english. There are a crap load of Americans that can hardly speak english, so if the UFC champs don't then who cares?

Why is everyone dissing on the fans of UFC whether they are "new" fans. Or, whether they are the so called True fans? If it wasn't for the new fans, there would not be as many PPV's or UFC on cable TV for everyone to complain about. Why not enjoy what is there.

I didn't mean to diss the fans so much as the way the UFC is being managed...the fans want the best and it's obvious by their volatile reaction when you criticise any UFC title holders that the fans have been duped into believing they're seeing the best.

But they aren't...they're being spoon fed so called "champions" that appeal to the largest demographic. That's why a Silva can walk in and take people apart so easily, because the talent is weak.

But hey, they sure look good and speak perfect good'ol boy american English ;)

Yes I do actually...I think there quite handsome in their own rugged kind of way. And if admitting that makes me less of a man then so be it. And if having their pictures tacked to the ceiling above my bed and occasionally glancing at them when I'm having my "alone time" makes me "gay" well then dammit so what :dunno:

Yeah...... that's right. Let's make sure all the competitors are English speaking, that way we can make sure anyone who becomes champ speaks English. I'm not sure having a crappy product like that would draw people in either. You talk a good line by saying "we don't care if you're from Poland or Brazil" and then look what you say right after that about everyone having to speak your language. The melting pot is not a good thing my friend. Now you can see why CANADA is the best place in the world to live

English, Portuguese, Japanese.....I could care less. If you can fight, you can fight. Simple.
Yah...why worry about if the fighter can speak fluent english/japanese.....when they have translators, staff members, or a written translation on TV or something ..don't see why everyones so worried about the way they speak. Marketing should not be a problem for non-english speakers...seriously, if the fighters good then why worry about language :p

Here's selling the product:

Silva before fighting Leban: "I'll tell you what's going to happen....I'm going to throw punches, and he's going to throw punches, and I'm going to knock him out."

Silva before fighting Franklin: "He's going to hit me, and I'm going to hit him and we'll see what happens."

A fighter don't need to speak period. He can be mute, so long as he's got "hands." That's all that matters ta me.

Translator, no big deal.
Do all the Pride fighters speak Japanese?

I think thats a pretty stupid thing to say, and I like the idea of people from other cultures coming here and fighting.
