Its the same 10point must system as boxing, where the judges decide each round giving the winner 10 points and the loser 9...
Of course the ref can take points away..
Also if you get knocked down you lose a point as well...

So you can win the round (10pts) but get knocked down (9pts) and the round is considered a draw at 9pts each.

Sadly though, what constitues "winning" a round is purely subjective.
Each judge has their own definition on what qualifies as "winning"...
Some will use overall activity, some judge by successful moves only...

This will always be a big controversy since there are no 'clear' definitions/rules/guidelines as to how judges must award/take away points...
Not just for the UFC, but for Boxing as well.

Apparently though, takedowns are considered to be 'signs' of a fighter dominance over another... which I think is drawing too much conclusions... IMHO of course

sherdog has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Just remember many different MMA torny have different scoring systems.
One thing I think the UFC should implement is damage distribution. Like in the BJ Penn vs. GSP, I think BJ Penn should have won; he dealt the most damage, however, if we break down the syllabus, GSP definitely would have won.
