Watch out MW divison, Palhares is here

I was looking over the UFC 88 card and saw Hendo was fighting Rousimar Palhares. I was weirded out for a while, thinking that it was odd going from fighting 2 champions to a no namer. So I did some research and started looking for some of Palhares fights, and I have to say that I was blown away.

There are two guys in the MW division (3 if you count Philo) that are renowned for having great BJJ, with those guys being Ricardo Almeda and Damien Maia. However, there is one thing both of these guys seriously lack, which is the reason they would both likely lose to Sliva. That is of course great wrestling.

Rousimar Palhares however, is quite different. From the 5 or so fights I was able to see, he has incredible strength, amazing wrestling and control, and the best MMA adapted BJJ in the MW division (although Maia would probably murder him in a straight BJJ match). His striking is also enough good enough to set up the takedown, which is really all he needs.

He still has a few questions to be answered, such as how will he do in the clinch if he can't out muscle his opponent and is his chin and heart any good.

However, this member of BTT shows a lot of promise, with amazing transitions and probably the best foot locks in MMA all together. The only thing I would like to see in him is more concentration on striking training, although I truly doubt he will need it to beat most everyone in the MW division.

After he subs Hendo, we will see a lot of band wagoning for this guy, so let me be the first to get the wheels going. He might not get a title shot any time soon, but he is going to be undefeated for a looong time and a definite future MW champion.

War Palhares
Thoughts?

I like him as well, but he will have a tough test against Dan Henderson. Hendo is still one of the best fighters in the world.

I've been kissing Rousimar's ass for a while now, but I'll gladly jump on this war wagon.

IronMan and I had a very long debate as to whether Rousimar's BJJ is that good or not (after watching him pull off that badass armbar on Salaverry---although he crossed his feet when he took Ivan's back which is a big no-no). However, I still believe the skillset you aptly described in your post is enough to give Henderson issues.

Toquinho is a beastly 185, very explosive and generally powerful. He has some nasty leg locks too which tend to get wrestlers in a lot of trouble *cough*Brock Lesnar*cough* so Henderson will have to be careful.

I think Toquinho will submit Henderson, mainly because Henderson's sub defense isn't that great, and Bustamante will be able to give Toquinho a lot of insight into how Henderson fights---having fought Hendo himself.

This will be an interesting fight. I wouldn't say Hendo's sub defense was at all suspect. The only people to sub him are the nog's and Silva.

Palhares has trained his BJJ with the Nogueiras, and if Anderson can submit Dan, I think Rousimar can. Henderson really isn't all that special on the ground, as long as Rousimar doesn't get cracked by one of those brick-fists, he'll be okay.

I don't disagree that he can sub henderson but its not going to be easy because I don't think palhares will outwrestle him to get him to a position that will allow for the sub and his striking isn't fearsome like Silva's. I'll be happy to be proven wrong because i am not a massive fan of henerson's. BTW that debate you had with Iron man was one of the most enjoyable I have seen. I kept wanting to say something but felt that two of yu should be left alone to sort it out. I guess you won't make the mistake of saying Pahares has the nest BJJ in the division again.

Palhares is a beast. He's going to take Henderson down and sub him, that's how good he is. The way he blows right through tough competition is unbelievable. Acacio, Negao and Salaverry had zero chance against the guy. Top notch BJJ, solid wrestling and some manly facial hair.

Anderson was able to reverse Henderson's Greco-clinch and put Henderson on his back, so I think Rousimar very well could, just based on his brute strength.

Dan Henderson can be exciting to watch, I'm just not too enthralled by his skillset. If he had a good submission game he could be a much more exciting fighter.

Haha yeah, I got a little too excited and forgot about Demian Maia and a few others at MW. I still think he has good enough submissions, top control and a passing game to give almost anyone in the division a run for their money.
