The fight had gone out of Hicks well before the fight was stopped. Hicks was far too hurt to effect any further take downs and Varner was always going to demolish an injured and standing Hicks.
The way I see it it is a simple decision to make:
Preventing serious injury to semi-conscious fighter > Crowd seeing brutal KO
I think we can agree that images like Williams KO of Coleman are bad for the sport. Enough big KO's occur where both guys are still "in the fight" all I'm saying is that when a guy becomes a sitting duck he should be protected.
