UFC Quick Quote: Georges St. Pierre considers shutting it down for 2008

"UFC Quick Quote: Georges St. Pierre considers shutting it down for 2008
By: MMAmania

“Several people mentioned that my next opponent should be BJ Penn. Nothing is obviously signed yet, but fighting him is my number one goal. I think he deserves a chance to challenge for my belt, but we’ll see what happens in the coming weeks. I hope deeply [that my next fight is in Montreal]. The President of the UFC, Dana White, said he would like to return to Montreal before the end of the year. For my part, I do not know if I will go back in the Octagon before 2009. I had four fights in the past 12 months. So I need rest. I like my life, but sometimes I have to relax…. I make so many sacrifices for me prepare. During training camps I can hardly live. Therefore, I need to refuel psychologically.”

– UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre tells RDS.ca that he may not return to action this year because of his recent activity. “Rush” is expected to next put his 170-pound title on the line against UFC Lightweight Champion and former welterweight belt holder, BJ Penn, in a blockbuster mega fight. It was widely expected that the showdown would take place on New Year’s Eve weekend on December 27; however, with four straight wins over top contenders such as Jon Fitch, Matt Serra, Matt Hughes and Josh Koscheck, it appears that St. Pierre may need more time to recharge his batteries to get up for the biggest fight of his career against “The Prodigy.” With more than four months until possible showtime let’s hope he takes a nice long vacation and reconsiders his most recent remarks."

I tried to link the orginal article but it's in french:
http://www.rds.ca/combats/chroniques/257701.html

GSP has fought a lot especially in light of Nog and Silva's pace over the same amount of time. Personally I think he should do what's best for him and not rush(c'mon) into a defense he might not be up to mentally. This would throw a huge wrench into BJ's and the LW division plans though. If GSP does this I wonder if BJ will decide to defend at LW and just hold the division hostage for a longer amount of time. Hmmm?

EDIT: Here's more on it:
http://www.cagepotato.com/2008/08/13...ear/#more-2278

Quote:
"So unless Dana White can bribe/threaten him into changing his mind, the UFC’s New Year’s show may be down one superfight. But no matter when the inevitable meeting goes down, it’s obvious that Penn wants it a hell of a lot more than St. Pierre does. If you watched the end of UFC 87 (video above), you probably picked up on the different vibes displayed by Penn (with his shrill cries of “LET’S DO IT GEORGES, YOU WANNA DO IT!?”) and GSP (who seemingly wants to fight Penn as much as anyone else who “deserve a shot”).

I’d imagine that’s because Penn has a lot more to gain in the matchup. If he loses to St. Pierre, he’s still the lightweight champion, and would be respected for taking on an incredibly talented fighter who’s naturally much larger than him; if he wins, he’s a legend in two weight classes. On the other hand, if GSP loses, then another brief title run has ended, and he drops his belt to a guy he was able to beat just a couple years ago; if he wins, nothing really changes for him. So it’s understandable why he wouldn’t be chomping at the bit to sign the fight agreement.

Though St. Pierre doesn’t talk much about Penn in the RDS.ca article, he does give mad props to Jon Fitch and says he was somewhat (though not completely) impressed with his own performance:

I am very pleased with my performance, but it wasn’t perfect. If I had to rate it from 1 to 10, I’d give it an 8.

What I appreciated the most about this battle is that I went five rounds. It’s the first time I’ve gone this far in a fight and it’s bringing me a lot of experience. It’s a contest that helped me grow, and will make a better fighter of me.

It should be mentioned that I didn’t find it hard to go an extra two rounds, as I am in very good physical shape. However, what I found particularly discouraging was Fitch’s determination. He is a true “Terminator”. As much as I tried to finish him off, he kept coming back. On at least two separate occasions, I was positive that he was completely unconscious, but each time he hit the ground, he got right back up."

the dude needs a rest no doubt but it is rumoured this wont be a title fight and that would hold two belts up for a long time, i hope this does not happen. especially since the HW belt is wrapped up for TUF. good find tho

One thing I like about GSP is he fights regularly. 4 times in 12 months is pretty brisk schedule these days, although I wish more fighters would try for that pace. The op is right though, GSP has virtually nothing to gain from this fight and lots to lose.

he's been doing a good job fighting every 3 months. If he needs a break he should take it.

It would give BJ time to seriously condition for a fight at 170.

I'd be cool with it in 2009, gives BJ a chance to actually defend his belt a few times.

Fighting every 3 months? Sorry, but I don't buy it. Yes, he's fought 4 times in the last 12 months, it was vs Koschek on august 25th, then vs Hughes on december 29th, that's 4 months later, then Serra on april 19th, almost 4 months, and vs Fitch just a few days ago, almost 4 months.

His rythm is of 3 fight a year, not 4. And he is a champion, unless by injury or TUF, he should defend his title regularly.

More on this, the man fought twice on 2006, 3 times on 2007 and twice again on 2008. That 8 fights in 3 years. 8/3 is less than 3 fights a year, so stop the shit on fighting 4 times a year, he only did that on 2005. The rest of years is 2-3 fights, not that much by any means. Just ask Jeremy Horn.

So let me get this straight - fighting four fights from August 25th 2007 to August 9th 2008 is NOT four fights in one year?!

Yes, because Jeremy Horn is the perfect fighter to model your career after...

i don't think you realize the extent these guys push themselves for each fight

from what i've heard, gsp has like a 12 week training camp...that's a hell of a long time to be training 6 days a week/ for ~8hours a day...

i'm not going to compare myself to those guys, as it would be insulting to them...but from my personal experience weight training, i've done 6 days a week ...and that was ~70minutes/workout...i did that for 2 months and....my whole body, especially my mind, was just exhausted...completely and utterly fatigued

especially when you consider the opponent he'll be facing, he'll need to train harder than he ever has before...

i'd say if your going to make gsp take this ridiculous fight...let him take it when he wants

I'm with you on that.

Unless they staple some kind of extra monetary bonus or some form of extra compensation that BJ doesn't get, I wouldn't blame GSP for not taking this fight. BJ is getting a luxury even being considered for this fight...

Ya and jeremy horn is also burnt out and not fighting inside the ufc currently. Most of his fights when he does fight every other month are guys way below his talent level.
