I really want to see this fight, but I can see why so many people are upset by it. That being said, blame Dana White, or whoever that pushed BJ to stay at 155 and get the belt. Fact of the matter is BJ was wanting a rematch with GSP almost immediately following the fight. After the fight with Pulver, BJ started talking about moving back up again to avenge his losses. Anybody who has followed BJ over the years knew that he wouldn't be happy at 155. He wants challenges and he will always seek them out.

Does BJ deserve the shot? No. Do others deserve a shot before BJ? Yeah,of course there are those that do. They aren't ready yet and this is a huge match-up that will give them time to find a true contender. Lets just enjoy what looks to be a great fight.

Look at the hype the fight is already getting, even though it hasn't even been finalized.

Niether BJ nor Silva deserve a title shot at WW or LHW, respectively.

A title shot should be earned through, at the very least, a few upper-echelon wins in the division. Anything else lacks ligitimacy. One could argue the merits of BJ's shot all they like but the fact remains he lost to the current Champ and also to Hughes... two losses in a division do not justify a legitimate shot at the strap.

But that doesn't mean it's not fun to watch.

I'm all for big fights and this one is a monster. I can't complain if the UFC wants to pit thier dominant WW champ against thier dominant LW champ. Both Fighters are a big step up in class compared to the other fighters in thier divisions. To me this fight makes sense.

Imo, the best case for Bj penn vs GSP is the event its taking place. The new years eve event is generally about putting on a spectacular show and has more room for "unfair" fights.
It comes down to the question, of who would you rather have fight GSP, a guy who has not beaten top guys, or a top 10 P4p fighter.

Unfortunately though, it doesn't come down to that question.
For one, the way you put it, it's loaded in GSP vs Penns favor as you completely diminish the WW's in contention. Everyone currently discussed as a title contender has beaten top tier fighters and they are, in themselves, top tier fighters. It's between amazing fighters in the WW division or arguably a top p4p fighter.
In addition, this isn't about what I want personally, it's about (and hopefully this isnt taken to emotional or cliche'd) what is best for the integrity of the sport. And I don't think being champion of one division entails a title shot in the other, at least, while there are so many competitors in Penns division.

Well Mother F***er!!! I just spent the past 10+ minutes typing a big ass post for this thread with all my reasons and points and I just sent it off into the void by clicking the wrong thing.

I'm completely irritated right now so I will bow out of this discussion and post a paraphased post much later.

Where is my Bud Light???

Even if we pretend Penn does deserve the shot (which he doesn't), he doesn't fight regularly enough to justify such fight.
Silva and GSP fight twice as much as Penn does, and if either of them feel like doing fights outside their weight divisions when there is no-one lined up for title shots I don't mind it. If these "side project fights" end up getting them deserved title shots then fine let them have them.
Penn is a cocky douchebag dreamer who has defended his title for one freakin time and already thinks its time to start disrespecting the rest of the LW guys by stalling the next title shot. Sure if he would fight as regularly as rest of the champs I could ignore the fact that he doesn't deserve it, but like this it looks like Florian has to wait for his shot like a year and I find it total bs. Now imagine Penn actually winning this fight (which he wont) and we'll have both titles being defended once a year max, if even that.
Penn's world will shatter hard when GSP beats him up and Floarian steals his LW title right after. After that I don't care which weight division he fights on and how regularly.

There, someone had to say it. Lots of neg rep from Penn nuthuggers incoming now though :P

I haven't heard anyone complaining about Silva not getting a title shot, just comparing it to B.J's situation. With that said, B.J's situation is completely different.

B.J is a former WW champion, lost a very close decision to Georges, is at the top of his game and would run through most LW fighters right now.

Georges has no contenders to fight right now. He just beat Fitch, he beat Koshcheck, Diego has a few fights to go to get #1 contender status, Thiago is busy fighting Diego(if Thiago loses he will drop down even more).

B.J vs Georges II is a major fight, huge. It should be done now, when they are still in their prime, on a big high in their careers. This fight makes sense, period.

GSP clearly won round 2 and 3, he took BJ down and made him spend most of round 2 and 3 on his back. Saying it was a close win yeah, but there is no controversy in that.
