GSP says the game has passed by old-timer Hughes

Looks like GSP decided to stop being the gentleman when it comes to Matt Hughes!

GSP says the game has passed by old-timer Hughes
By Steve Cofield

He's one of the true gentlemen of the sport, but you had to expect UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre would fire back at Matt Hughes after the former champ ripped his performance at UFC 87.

In interviews and on his blog, Hughes repeatedly said that he thought GSP's fight was boring and that he looked smaller physically.

Was Hughes angered by the fact that St. Pierre said the Fitch fight was the toughest of his career?

"(Hughes) was not the toughest fight," stated St. Pierre when asked the question by Joe Ferraro of The Fan 590 in Toronto. "You just have to look at the result of the fights. Jon Fitch is part of the new breed of mixed martial arts fighters. He's at another level than these guys. (The older fighters) don't realize that sometimes."

GSP also went on to say that Hughes had better get back his hunger if he expects to beat Matt Serra down the road.

"If Matt Hughes stays the same as his last couple fights, he's gonna lose. He looked like he didn't do the sacrifice to be ready for the fight (against Thiago Alves at UFC 85). Mentally, he didn't look like he had the drive anymore."

St. Pierre told Ferraro that because of the injuries suffered against Fitch, he can't train for three more weeks. He's planning on taking a trip to Brazil before getting back to the gym on a full-time basis.

You forget that this isn't just some brutal sport where everyones out to kill each other. Its much more like a game of physical chess.-looney liam

Sadly, he's correct, though many have said this before. I hate to admit it, but Hughes needs to smash Serra and then retire, because dudes are getting better while Hughes is still the same guy. He's still one of the greatest fighters and champions ever, he just needs to call it quits.

i actually think he's gotten worse...his takedowns have looked so telegraphed lately and he seems to give up on them too easily

Ditto- his game hasn't evolved and the new breed of fighters are more well-rounded than Matt ever was. Pretty much just stating fact- not insulting him.

Besides even if he was- Matt is such a dickhead he deserves it.

I just hope he motivates himself enough to beat Serra, then he can call it quits. Don't wanna retire with a loss.

GSP was spot on with his comments on Hughes. But what would you expect Hughes to say if asked about GSP's performance at UFC87? "Georges did great, Fitch is just way better than I am."

He could have left it at GSP did great. That would have been classy.

That's not really disrespectful. In the same way commenting on how Hughes dominated Royce isn't disrespectful to him either, it's just stating fact on how the sports evolved.

I totally agree Hughes hasn't looked the same. It seems he put so much effort into developing his striking game, that he lost heart when he realised he couldn't be the best at every aspect of the sport. Now he's just trying to salvage some of his legacy. If Serra beats him, he'll have lost a lot of that legend status IMO. Ken Shamrock anyone?

I'm not slating their previous achievements here btw. People just remember you on how you went out. You're only as good as your last fight etc.
