Just rewatched Forrest/Rampage and noticed something...

Firstly, I like Forrest alot and do think he won the fight but from rewatching it....

Forrests boxing is.....actually pretty bad. His technique when he punches is very poor. He dips his chin right out there. He got rocked in the first round twice and it was almost entirely because of that. Thinking back...that's how Jardine KO'd him too....

His striking game all around is just pretty meh...but seems to have pretty hard leg kicks at least.

There's much more to striking than having good punching technique. In fact, it's probably one of the least important elements.

uh....as mentioned...3 times this bad technique got him rocked....one KO'd. and i'm singling out his boxing as a focal point for this discussion.

btw i'm not trying to bash forrest or anything..i just wanted to make a point since it seems to be common thought that forrests boxing is "much improved"....well there's still alot of room for improvement

It might not've been that great had it been a boxing match, but boxing in MMA is different. The range, the pace, the angles, ect. He certainly has room for improvement, but not that much, and considering the rate at which he's been improving I can certainly see him hanging with the best strikers at 205 before too long.

Edit: And I wasn't referring so much to the fact that you mentioned boxing in particular as to the fact that you were implying that 'good' technique in general makes a striker.

I noticed as well. If only Page had been more on and aggressive. This is why WAND would be a very very bad matchup for Forrest IMO.

I agree Aaronyman, he has a very reckless striking style. Not that it's a bad thing for some fighters, but not the greatest choice for him.

He hasn't learned how to be able to get any real power out of his punches and still leaves his chin out there when he's swinging. You really need to either have one punch KO power or a well protected chin. He has neither. Tons of heart, but that only helps when you can open your eyes.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Forrest, I just don't see him holding on to the belt long unless he REALLY tightens up his stand up.

I don't see him gaining too much more power in his punches, so I feel he needs to learn to protect his chin better while punching. He really has a good ground game, maybe he needs to be focusing on that more and more if he wants to keep the belt for a while.
