Silva quit talk rubbished by Soares
by Ben Blackmore, 23 September 2008
Anderson Silva’s manager has quashed rumours that the Brazilian is about to quit The UFC, insisting MMA fans can still expect at least another six fights out of “The Spider”.
Silva, who is widely recognised as The UFC’s top pound-for-pound fighter, recently sparked fears he would walk away from Mixed Martial Arts.
Speaking to a Brazilian television station, the middleweight champion admitted he was thinking of quitting within the next 12 months.
Talk has been gathering of a potentially money-spinning bout between Silva and boxing middleweight legend Roy Jones Jr.
Such speculation has so far drawn the wrath of UFC president Dana White, but Silva’s manager Ed Soares insists relations with White are good and there are no plans to severe ties with The UFC.
“Dana hasn't done anything to f*** over Silva,” Soares wrote on MMA.tv.
“It's the complete opposite. Dana has been very good to Anderson.
“I can guarantee you Anderson will not be retiring within the next year. He still has 6 fights on his contract.”
Silva is currently set to return to the 185lb division against Patrick Cote at “UFC 90”. The Brazilian is then expected to press ahead with his bid for glory at light-heavyweight.
That's 6 fights including the Cote fight. It's very possible that Silva fight 5 times within the next year, and then retires.I don't think Soares squashed anything, especially when the words came from Silva himself.
I like Silva, but I really dislike his comments on how he has nothing left to prove. What IF he loses to Cote? What IF he loses to any of his next 5 opponents? I think that comment was WAY early and honestly quite condescending too a lot of people.
to many fights I still need to see out of him but I would like to see the boxing match happen and thats the main reason I would like to see him take a break from mma. I would also like to see him fight in a k1 a bit.
6 fights left huh? silva's been saying he wants 6 fights a year for a while now. i think dana will end up spacing out silva's fights to keep him under contract for as long as possible.
if anderson is leaving just to pursue the roy jones fight, maybe dana should consider booking a super card with jones/silva as the main event. unfortunately thats extremely unlikely, A. dana has always been against cross promotions, and B. theres the complication of having a boxing match in the cage, unless they get a ring out specially for the fight. if the fight did go down though, think of the money involved! $$$ dana would be wiping his ass with gold plated toilet paper for the rest of his days.
