This Is The Re-Watch: UFC 58: USA vs Canada.

Holy hell, Tom Murphy vs Icho Larenas was horrible. Murphy vs Larenas did indeed suck a cow's anus. Murphy's the guy who had a horrible, horrible fight against Rashad Evans on TUF 2. Larenas is a dude with a wacky name and shitty wrestling. Murphy takes him down and unleashes some really dull GnP. This is the whole fight. Larenas bleeds, but man, shit, this sucked. Thankfully, both men never fought in the UFC again.

Lambert has some saggy tits, but saggy tits is, like, what Lambert's all about. A shitty ground game and meh striking is what Rob MacDonald is all aboot. Whoa, Lambert executes a fun saggy titty slam, and pulls off a nice kimura to end things. Did Rob macDonald have any fans? Because, I don't remember anyone ever liking the guy.

Stout vs Fisher 1 was the total goods, and I actually scored it 29-28 for Fisher, as I gave him the first 2 rounds. Stout won the last round based on better striking. Spencer won the first 2 based on grappling and hard striking. This is the best fight on the card and a solid FOTYC for 2006. Also, this was much better than their one-sided rematch, but hey, that was still fun.

I liked Hominick vs Edwards, sort of. I mean, it was pretty fun, but Yves Edwards getting triangled by Mark Hominick was....just....embarrassing. Wow, that triangle was slow as hell, too. Yves just lays there and lets him slap it on. I think I shed a tear or 2. I've heard 2 stories about the ending. The first was that those body shots killed Edwards and he never recovered. The second was that Yves' family bet the house on him and he took a dive. I believe the former, but wouldn't be surprised if the latter was true, since Edwards did NOTHING on the ground. Edwards' career just never recovered after this. Dude got triangled by a 145 pound striker with bad grappling.

Oh yeah, Doerksen vs Marquardt was fun stuff. Doerksen has never had a boring fight, and Nate can bring the fun when he needs to. These 2 starts hugging it out like MEN in the beginning, and it's all punchy face action after that. Really fun grappling by both men, and fun stand-up. I like how Nate sets up his kicks. Dude's striking is damn underrated. Doerksen ends up rocking Nate in the second, and man, I love this fight. Third was pretty much all Nate. I ended up scoring it 29-28 for Nate. This gets almost no love, and that makes me sad.

The first round of Penn vs GSP is the most overrated round in MMA history. GSP landed his fair share of solid strikes, both punches and kicks, but people have said that this should've been a 10-8 round. What the hell are these people smoking? GSP gets poked in the eye and still hangs with Penn standing. A one-eyed GSP was able to beat BJ Penn. That shows you how good GSP is. Penn's chin is so manly that many seem to think that GSP never hit him standing. In the second, GSP lands some nice kicks and gets Penn down a few times. Penn is gassed. In the third, GSP gets Penn down a few times, but Penn's good enough to neutralize GSP. Penn tries a gogoplata, and GSP doesn't let it bother him.

How freakin' hilarious is it that Cecil freakin' Peoples scored the fight 29-28 for Penn?

Swick vs Vigneault was the debut of the Swickatine. Vigneault looks like Vladdy the Janitor, except he doesn't have Vladdy's talent. Swick tries a flying knee and then slaps on the Swickatine. Somewhere, BBJD7 craps his pants with joy.

Franklin vs Loiseau is, like, my favorite Franklin fight. Dude ends up breaking his hand and still beats the living shit out of Loiseau. Many (Including me) thought that this would be a competitive fight, but Franklin proved many wrong and battered the living hell out of him for 5 rounds. Holy shit, Loiseau looks like an alien that's been shot in the head. Franklin is the man, and dude showed his heart by going out there and performing greatly with a broken hand. While guys like Pellegrino and Vera wilted, Franklin never stopped fighting. What a beating. What a manly beating. I felt they sort of got rid of Loiseau early. I mean, he got his ass kicked here, but he should've been given another chance after the Swick fight. Ah well, can't say I'm sad to see him go. Franklin is a great fighter when he's facing non-Brazilian guys. Loiseau has never recovered from this beating.

Fun card, one of my favorite's of 2006. Fun concept, too, and some solid matchmaking by Joe Silva.

Discuss.

Yeah Loiseau had two rats above his eye. Not mice, big fat rats.
That was ugly.

I totally agree with you about the 1st round of BJ vs. GSP, I never understood how people thought that BJ completely dominated it. Sure there was some nice striking in there, but GSP didn't do as badly as people make out.

Stout Fisher - quality stuff.

Fedor fights I want to see..

Fedor vs. Josh Barnett
Fedor vs. Randy Couture
Fedor vs. Tim Sylvia - DEMOLISHED
Fedor vs. Andrei Arlovski - DEMOLISHED

hmmmmm, i wonder how many become reality..

This brings back some nice memories as this was the first event i rember watching on actual TV rather than the internet.

The UFC should sign Ninja just so he can fight Lambert in a battle of the podge v saggy tits.

Damone, I've said this before, but I see Rob McDonald strolling my neighbourhood mall in his UFC sweater, it's kinda sad.

It's because gsp was cut around his eye in the first round and bj didn't have so much as a scratch on him. That made it appear a lot more one sided than it actually was.

The first event I ever watch and it got me hooked on MMA.

Icho is HUGE but lacked skill.

I still remember coming in and watching Penn Vs St Pierre and then Franklin Vs Loiseau.

I just watched this show again about a week ago and it was a really fun show. Even though Yves did nothing on the ground I have always liked Hominick and the standup was really fun so I liked that fight a lot! Plus we got to see Marquardt win again

Gonzaga vs dos Santos - UFC on VS
Vera vs Jones - UFC on VS
Bibs vs Hansen - Dream 13
GSP vs Hardy - UFC 112
Gomi vs Florian - UFN 21

I'd be so down for that, though Lambert would smash Ninja.

Yeah, the facial damage to GSP was a huge reason why many thought that Penn dominated that round. I wonder if those same people thought Sam Stout won the rematch against Spencer, seeing as Spence's face was messed up afterwards.

The people who were questioning GSP's heart after the Serra loss should've watched this fight. The guy was fighting a great fighter with 1 eye, and he ended up winning. Shit, that's heart, and I'm more of a BJ Penn fan than a GSP fan.

I believe Sanchez vs Goulet was rumored for this card, but, I believe, Diego pulled out due to injury (I could be wrong). Anyone else think Sanchez would've smashed Jonny Gouly?

I'm kind of a MacDonald fan now after reading that he wears his UFC sweater in the mall, hoping to get noticed. That's just so pathetic, but I dig it for some reason.

Seeing as Sanchez can take a puncg as well as anyone in the division and Goulet can barely take a friendly wave there is litte doubt that Sanchez would have WHOMPED Goulet.
