BJ "The Vampire" Penn

I became a BJ Penn fan after watching Matt Hughes/Penn II. Watching Penn stuff Hughes' takedown attempts with almost comic flexibility, and then taking Hughes's back, was mesmerizing to watch.

But after BJ Penn vs. Sherk, I stopped being a fan. And simply watched his antics with a disdain I now only hold for WWE performers.

It's one thing to hype a fight by saying you're going to lick your opponent's blood, but to actually DO it, while your beaten opponent is on the ground, and unconscious, with security surrounding him, is just plain disgraceful.

And then there's BJ Penn refusing to release a rear naked choke on Jens Pulver on TUF.

As brutal as MMA is, it is still a hybrid martial art form, and this entails respecting one's opponent, rather than humiliating them.

Has anyone else's views on BJ Penn changed as a result of his antics?

bj's actually grown on me. i used to hate his arrogance, but he's never afraid of anyone and he backs his sh*t up.

i don't care for his blood licking antics, but i like his arrogance.

eager to fight that monster (GSP) so willingly deserves respect.

"you wanna do it george? you wanna do it?!"

LOL

I don't like Penn, simply because I just don't like him. I just never liked him, ever.

Sure, he does things that make me dislike him more, but I never say I dislike him for that one thing. I just don't like him.

1, licking blood, not cool. Kinda weird.. and just not cool.

2, holding a choke is never okay by me, holding ANYTHING or doing ANYTHING while the ref is trying to stop it makes you look like a dick. That's why I hate Kid yamamoto.

3, eh, GSP will beat him. So i'm cool.

Personally I have never liked Penn. But I will respect him as a fighter because he is great. And it seems like guys that work with him say he is a really nice guy. Shoot he even acted friendly to Pulver after their second fight. So I think outside the UFC he is probably a good guy but since I have only seen him in the UFC I'm going to have to continue to dislike him.

And I'm picking GSP to beat him.

Love me some BJ moppin fools up. Especially tough guys like Joe and Sherk. Can't wait until he rises to the occasion against Rush.

I enjoy watching BJ fight and find a lot of his fight promo's funny but can see why people wouldn't like him.

What I can't understand is why people will think that GSP will destroy BJ. Penn is not a good fighter, he is a GREAT fighter. As is GSP so the fight will be close and I imagine very close.

No, GSP is a totally different fighter now and BJ doesn't train, EVER!! And he only eats burritos, and SPAM, and peanut buttah cups.

Like him or hate him, you have to respect him. BJ Penn oozes talent and is a legend of MMA.
As for GSP vs Penn 2, I just see GSP being able to control the fight, get a couple of take downs and gradually dismantle Penn. Should be a good fight though as Penn is tough as teak and is dangerous everywhere.

I agree holding the choke was in bad taste, the blood thing is kind of funny to me, but i can see why people dislike it.... I honestly hope he puts a beating on GSP. I like GSP but BJ is hands down my fav fighter and i think he'll shock the world with his new work ethic and now that he ACTUALLY trains!

BJ wouldn't really be shocking anyone if he were to defeat GSP. He at least proved since defeating Pulver that he's in a different state of mind. In any manner though, it's a true pick 'em fight, one I believe will ultimately come down to whom the better conditioned fighter will be. Where BJ lacks for in terms of athleticism, he has in pure talent.

Neither of them have any real substantial deficiencies in their game, which is what makes a fight of this caliber so exciting to watch. GSP's MMA wrestling is on near uncharted levels right now, enough to put BJ squarely on the mat, but BJ also has excellent scrambling and sufficient dexterity that could thwart away GSP's biggest window of the fight.

i cant wait to see bj put the beat down on peppy la pue. this is going to be a great fight. the one thing that i dont like is the holding the choke on pulver. But heat of the moment thing and didnt they have some bad blood. I think he should have defended his belt one more time before jumping to 170. But that is a whole different thread so. bj is my favorite fighter and i hate gsp so my decision may be slightly biased. I am not disrespecting gsp skills he is crazy good, i just dont really like him.

I just finished watching GSP and Fitch on Spike TV. The last round was very moving. Before the round, GSP shook Fitch's hand, and gave him a pat of encouragement. At the end of the round, GSP fell to his knees and bowed to his opponent. That is true respect. After he got up, GSP told him that this loss would make Fitch a better fighter. THEN, GSP shook BJ Penn's hand, and said he would fight him or anyone else, no questions asked.

That is a true warrior.

BJ Penn, on the other hand, walks into the ring, obviously overweight, getting booed by the Target Center audience, but still trying to get their support anyway, gesticulating wildly, asking for their (non-existent) support. No class.

I admit BJ is good, but I dislike him alot. He is a cocky dreamer who at the moment is holding an entire LW division as hostage while he is waiting for the GSP fight. He doesn't fight frequently enough to be able to defend even 1 belt enough and now he goes for second? riiiight... Worst case scenario is he actually beats GSP, because then we most likely wont see WW belt being defended at all on 2009.
No worries though I don't see a way Penn can beat GSP though, gsp has improved so much compared to Penn since last fight, it'll be far from close fight unless Penn pokes both of GSP's eyes this time. ^^

After GSP and Kenflo are done with him he doesn't have any belts left to stall entire divisions with though, and on that point I don't care who he fights.

I think that is one of the things that make mma so appealing to so many people. the diverse characters. All of the great fights we have going on right now. just a clash of titans. Not just this fight, but the nature of the sport. Two guys walk in, battle with all power, heart, talent they have and only one walks out. Im not the best at writing so I hope you guys get what im tryin to say. But that is why im proud to say that im and addict.
