I keep hearing: Penn would have won if he wasn't injured during the fight.
Doesn't the fact that Penn was injured in the fight with Hughes say something about Hughes? Geez! The guy blew out his ribs and stamina trying to submit an ox.
How about when Pete Spratt beat Robbie Lawler with LEG KICKS. Does that become a suspect win? Lawler called it quits because he could barely stand. Penn fought through the pain and showed a ton of courage but he was outmanouevered by Hughes and lost the fight. I'mm not even that big a fan of Hughes but you just can't logically argue the man's dominance in his weight division.
I respect Penn's heart and skill but that is what's involved with fighting at this level: Skills, Strength, Conditioning and staying healthy to finish the fight on your terms. The man has SKILLS, His Conditioning is suspect and he is definitely short on strength when stacked against Hughes. He could dominate the LW division if he would stay serious about fighting and finish his fights. Dana White said it best: Don't ever let it go to the judges because you never know how it'll go!
And for the record, I think a fighter's record does say alot about that fighter. You could be the best BJJ practitioner in the world but you have to win MMA fights to be a champion.

No, that injury doesn’t say anything about Hughes. BJ injured HIMSELF because Hughes made a mistake and Penn tried to capitalize on it and ended up with a freak injury. And I wouldn’t say he blew his stamina, with that injury he could barley breath so only Penn knows if he was the least bit tired in that 3rd round. Even if he wouldn’t have injured himself, anything could have happened I’m not saying Hughes wouldn’t still have won but he was with out a doubt getting beat up until that point.

I would have to say the best would be in this order.
Hughes: He is the champ and has defended his belt allot.
Bj Penn: Even though I feel GSP is the better fighter over BJ, BJ has at least became champ once.
Then finally GSP, I would normally rank GSP above BJ but GSP , regardless of how awsome he is, he has not touch gold yet, the other two have. We shall see after ufc 65 because if GSP wins, i will throw his ranking way way above BJ.

Your forgetting BJ dominated Matt Hughes the first time they fought and was doing so again. the fact that BJ hurt his rib was kust bad luck there was no mastermind plan from Matt Hughes to injure BJ's rib it was just a freak accident Matt Hughes is lucky he still has the belt. |

I think its easy to say now but i honestly believe if BJ Penn had turned up to fight GSP the way he did against Matt Hughes then it would not have gone to the judges i believe Penn would have won, not to underestimate GSP as i believe his standup is as good as Penns.
With those three i will give top respect to Hughes because of what he has achieved with his defences but you could not say he would never lose to either GSP or Penn.

Yeah. He was getting beat up and he pulled out a no injury win. BJ Penn didn't have a freak injury. He even said that he felt something pull while he was defending himself. Hughes may not have known Penn was injured but he did capitalize off of it to get the win. It seems like no one is impressed if Hughes wins unless he totally decimates somebody.

A wins a win, if roles were reversed how would die hard Hughes fans react?, the injury was sustained during the fight so much as i support Penn and believed he was the better fighter that night he lost fair and square.

Nobody gives credit to Coleman for beating Shogun but you give credit to Hughes for beating BJ?
GSP did a clench and pray in the 3rd. Finally got a takedown didn't land anything got caught in an omoplata. GSP got the W in the win column but he did not beat BJ.
BJ Penn is the number 1 Welterweight.  |
