Quoteworthy:

“This was the high point in my career … When I received my black belt in karate, when I conquered the UFC belt, and today.”

UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre gushes about his recent promotion to Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Bruno Fernandes from the Gracie Barra camp. Fernandes is a decorated practitioner who now resides in Canada along with “Rush.” The honor could perhaps not have come at a better time — St. Pierre is set to rematch BJ Penn at UFC 94 on January 31 … and his jiu-jitsu is kind slick, too. Just a little bit.

Ya I think that is GSP's weak point too, if you can call it a weak point.

His striking is usally pretty damn good, but when you compare it to A. Silva, he is just on another level. Would love to see GSP possibly go train with some Chute Box guys to improve his striking.

You have to love GSP always trying to improve even when he's #1 and people constantly reminding him of it.

wow..thats great..
yeah he refused to recieve his blackbelt before for he thinks he did'nt deserve it before..

black belt in karate now black belt in bjj.. he joins machida and mir with these titles.

The fact that he refused a black belt just shows how humble the dude is... still I don't know if he'll be able to beat BJ.

Edit: Then again, his refusal to take it may just show you how much he wants his reputation to be that of a "good, humble man". Either way, the dude definitely deserved it.

GSP is getting the right tools to be the undisputed WW champion for a long time.

Im pretty sure that his BJJ is way above the normal black belt level. Combine that with world-class wrestling skills and very relaxed striking, hes getting there.

I agree that I wouldnt mind seeing him work his muay thai. To those who still think BJ got a chance, you'll see the night of the event :thumb02:

FactioNN said it quite nice with the "stellar arsenal" and "well rounded," I love watching GSP fight and the fact that he is always striving to improve shows how smart, dedicated, and humble he really is. Can't wait to see him duke it out with Penn, should be a great fight.

Congratulations GSP!!

Good news, GSP is such a young guy and just keeps improving at an insane rate. Give him 2 more years and the guy will be unstopable. CAnt wait to see his future acheivments.

Do you know what else would be cool? he already has awsome judo but if he focused on judo and worked hard on his throws I could see him having the Sickest throws on earth, would make for some super exiting fights

Just out of curiosity, how long did GSP even train in BJJ to get his black belt? I know normally it takes about 8-10 years to get a black belt, and I'm pretty sure GSP did it in quite a bit less than that. Anyone know?

I think he started around 2000-2001 or something

Scary thing is, when he was first offered a black belt in BJJ, he probably deserved it, he just din't "think" he did. Now that he accepted it, he must know that his BJJ is even better than it was back then.

this doesn't really change anything, everyone knows GSP is an unbelievable wrestler/submission/submission defense fighter. He hasn't shown any weakness on the ground since he got sloppy against Hughes in their first fight.

Everyone is right, he should have been wholly devoted to defending strikes. After the beating BJ gave him in the first round of their fight, and BJ's performance standing against Sherk, he has to see that... right?

Well deserved.

And I agree about the Chute Box camp...I think that would be great for him. Although heading to Thailand would probably be better for him as Chute Box tends to have a lot of control over who they let train with them and fight under their moniker.

Congratulations GSP. This guy is unbelievable. He just keeps on improving.
I dont think GSP has poor stand up by any means, however he is a long way behind the Anderson Silva's of the world. If he were to put all his efforts into concentrating on his stand up game, putting it together with his already awesome wrestling and submission games he will rule the WW division for a very long time.

We've had a lot discussion on GSP's striking. He uses a Karate style striking versus a Muay Thai style striking. His striking is very good. Some people want to compare styles and not practitioners of a style. We see the same comments when discussing Machida's striking.

You can compare Muay Thai to Karate striking the same way you can compare Judo takedowns to wrestling takedowns. It largely comes down to the experience, training, and comfort level of the competitor.

Right, but they don't have to be mutually exclusive. Why can't you use Karate AND Muay Thai during striking, whichever is appropriate in your situation? I mean that right there is the essence of mixed martial arts. Remember Machida's devastating clinch-knee barrage on David Heath? That was straight out of MT, they don't do that kinda stuff in Shotokan karate. Or Fedor using combat *****, which has elements similat to a combined form of Judo, wrestling and BJJ. Granted GSP won't switch his dominant fighting stance and style, but a few techniques and defences here and there from the most popular and devastating stand up discipline can't hurt.
