Yeah, that's pretty much how I'd sum up the fight too. That seems to be the case with BJ, and my main deterant to liking him much. His game is almost too defensive. With BJJ skills like that, he should put them more on the offensive. At this point, he only really uses it to avoid beatings. Then he tries to use his stand-up for the offensive. Although he can throw bombs, so there's nothing wrong with that. But a guy with his Jiu Jitsu skills should go into a fight with a submission in mind, not a knock out.
Good point, definatly.
I think a lot of it seems to be his slack attitude towards fighting.
yea... its kinda messed up that gsp got so much credit for takedowns...makes me wish they looked at the fighters afterwards and see who looks like they were in a fight
penn looked like he just walked down the street...gsp looked like he has his face mashed into it
think about how good those three guys are (gsp/hughes/gsp) easily some of the dominent in their weightclass in the world. So to do that to someone whos THAT good is impressive to say the least
and about the above...i think hes a very pacient fighter on the ground...throw the wrong punch...move your body wrong..BANG submission..he never ever looks paniced which is something i definately admire
i am gonna regret posting this because i dont want to start a war but here i go.
Why credit? he finsihed an injurjed bj penn then could barly move without pain nevermind push the weight of hughes off of him.
He has never been finished while 100%!
Could matt hughes finish a 100% Bj penn, personally i think not.
Hughes survived Penn's dangerous offense in the 1st and 2nd rounds. The guy was outclassed, but he hung in there. Why doesn't Hughes get credit for this? Do people realize that a motivated Penn will always be the one on offense?
Penn got injured, but that doesn't disguise the fact that Hughes finished him. Injuries happen, and when you're squirming out like Penn did(Who sort of under-estimated Hughes' strength), things are bound to break/tear/whatever.
Could he finish a 100% Penn? Probably not. Penn at 100% is a scary person.
BJ Penn is by no means a waste of talent. He's called "The Prodigy" for a reason. I think any long-time MMA fan would know that. But he does lack a certain amount of drive and/or conditioning it takes to win fights in the UFC. Almost every fighter will admit, conditioning is everything in the sport, and BJ simply doesn't have that.
All this speculation of what would've happened if BJ wasn't injured ignores the fact of who injured him.
I mean, if you're injured to the point where you can't fight effectively, well sorry...but you lost. It wasn't some random unfair circumstance, he got beat by a more motivated, better conditioned fighter. Skill isn't always enough
"Remember when you are resting, someone somewhere is training, and when you meet him, he will win."
i dont see how you think he wasnt in shape for the hughes fight we will never know and you are assuming that he wasnt...he didnt gas in the second like he did in the gsp fight so we at least know he was in better shape.. he admitted to being out of shape, not studying gsp , and not really training for the fight but he wanted hughes and i believe he was motivated for this fight and was in good shape... the injury caused to what look like him gasing im not making excuses yea injuries happen in fights its unfortunate but the injury is what cause him to gas so you cant blame his training on that .. and i would go as far as saying hes a waste of talent more so a less motivated fighter hopefully when he recovers he gets his drive back and gets the belt
