The extra weight he puts on wont make a difference against guys who have been wrestling their whole lives and who are clearly stronger men(Lesnar,Carwin, Couture ect). You mention all of those guys but you didn't mention Nogueira.
Werdum getting bigger and stronger will give him a huge advantage over Nogueira. He will be able to get Nog down a lot easier and will have a strength advantage on the ground.
Ricco became a drunk slob and stopped taking care of his body. Werdum is training full time at a gym known for conditioning.
Plus this is the perfect chance for him to try something new because Junior isn't a great opponent.
