Sherk didn't start his takedowns with strikes as much as he usually does in his fights.. he shot in and sucked Griffin's hips out from under him, but Tyson used the cage really well. I think Sean would have actually had more success going for takedowns in the center of the ring.

Easily FotN though.

Sean Sherk has always been boring as hell to me, every win he has in the UFC has been a decision. At least he was trying to knock him out this time.

Yeah, you can't really take that fight and look at this one and say, "Wow his striking has really improved". Tyson doesn't have the reach or striking ability of Penn. I would still like to see Sherk and Guida. I have a feeling it might go the same route though.

Sherk has always had good hands. Tonight he was finally fighitng someone his hands that he could actually reach. I thought the striking was about even. I think Sherk landed a little more but Griffin landed the more powerful shots. It was a great fight. If Sherk used his wrestling people would be complaining calling him a lay n pray fighter. The dude put on a good show. I got no complaints with is gameplan.

To answer your question. He didnt use his wrestling much in the last two fights because the guys he faught had very good takedown defense.

Sherk actually answered this question at the post conferance, he said he wanted to prove he was a three dimensional fighter.

it was because of leg kicks. In both the fights he was actively looking for take downs in the first round maybee even the secound but both BJ and Tyson were using leg kicks to break him down. After a few of those he lost his explosiveness.

Once he realized he wasnt going to be able to be as explosive with the double legs he was actively looking for head and body take downs. He got a few with Tyson but he couldnt get one with bj. In the mean time he was forced to bang it out or else he would get ko'd with bj he got out classed with tyson they pretty much went toe to toe.

Usually when you see two guys fight that have solid wrestling it will usually turn into a slug fest.

I agree. Even though Sherk has very acomplished stand-up.. he could have made a bigger difference if he would have gone for the takedown in the 3rd round. I know both of them were slippery as hell but seeing as how Sherk managed to easily take Griffin down two times, I don't think he couldn't have done it again.

But hey, Sherk won anyway, grats to him!

I agree Sherk has underrated stand-up. The ground is his sweet spot but it worked for him against Griffin so I have no objection with him keeping it on the feet.

You're just a cook...

read my above posts once you get a kick or two to the quads you lose your explosiveness. He couldnt shoot in on tyson for double legs any more because tysons wrestling is to good for that he needed all of his power to do it. Once he got 1 or 2 stiff kicks in that wast an option. he did how ever use his wrestling he was working clinch take downs and using the hands to set up.

I think that is what he is attempting to do. He doesnt want to be one dimensional like hughes any more and is trying to combine striking with his take downs and use the strikes to set him up.

I actually enjoy Sherk taking bjj black belts down and breaking their guards, thats what I wanted to see in Sherk vs. Penn fight too which is why I didn't like it when they kept it standing.
Agreed though I enjoyed his striking alot this time, but he should stick with his awesome ground game vs. guys with better stand up and longer reach.
