I dont want a ranking system because imo anything associated with boxing should not be in the UFC. I want this business to thrive and I think the best way to do that is not worry about rankings and just make fights the fans want to see. Dana does a good job anyway. There may be some fights that are unfair but the majority of fights are desering and well thought out.

I can agree with that statement wholeheartedly. You mentioned the fact that the UFC should stay away from what boxing does. This is the one single solitairy point that keeps me from being %100 for official rankings. In other words I am leary of ranking because boxing does it too lpbigd4444

I would love to see some "official" rankings, but I'm not sure the UFC should be ranking their own stable. In a perfect world there would be a sanctioning MMA organization who's sole purpose was to oversee the world of MMA. Not like a UFC or DREAM who have vested interests in the rankings but something more along the lines of the boxing commission only for MMA. Official rankings would go a long way towards legitimizing MMA in the mainstream, as it is now there is to much of a circus atmosphere around various promotions and their claims regarding their fighters.

Im not for rankings in the UFC take Shogun situation he was ranked the number 1 LHW and they gave him a tough fight in Forrest who was top 10 but not not top 5 at the time. Forrest beats Shogun and became number 1 contender.

If a ranking system was in place that fight would not have occured cos Shogun could not be ranked by the UFC without a fight despite being number 1 in the world.

MMA does not lend itself to rankings like a league position Yushin Okami was the number one contender but became injured so Cote stepped up but he is not ranked as a top ten MW. Its trur Silva has beaten all other contenders but if a ranking sysytem was in place maybe Henderson would get another shot but would not be ready so soon so Silva would have to wait until Okami or Henderson were healed.

Rnakings would slow things up in my opinion.

I agree with cplmac. With the UFC controlling their own rankings they would just rank whoever they want, wherever they wanted in order to make the fights that make them money.

For it to really work they would have to have a neutral party ranking system but that would likely include all fighters and not just UFC and I believe that is called WAMMA.

Gonzaga vs dos Santos - UFC on VS
Vera vs Jones - UFC on VS
Bibs vs Hansen - Dream 13
GSP vs Hardy - UFC 112
Gomi vs Florian - UFN 21
Nelson vs Struve - UFN 21

I want a rating system, but I want it to be top 5, not 10. That way the UFC has more freedom in making fights. I think the best reason for a ranking system is to make sure there is a real #1 contender. Also I think it would be good because they could have title eliminators be 5 rounds just like in boxing they are 12. They only problem I see with this is the injury question. Let's say that Alves vs Koscheck was a title eliminator. So Alves get's GSP, but gets hurt. Does Koscheck get GSP or is it whoever was ranked the #3 contender, Sanchez?, before their fight.

If there was an official ranking system, so many forum addicts would see the sunlight again. It would cut speculation threads down, thus affording more time on agruments about hypothetical fights, winner predictions, and going outdoors possibly. It might help boost the economy, who knows?

I'd honestly just be talking about how the ratings are BS and biased and stating why my ratings are better.

Just because there is a ranking system doesn't mean it has to dictate the match-making. I'm for it just to get a better idea of the landscape, but im also cool with lower downs in the top 10 fighting higher ranked dudes.

In college football, the high ranked teams still play the unranked ones.

Demian Maia may be the Fred Astaire of jiu-jitsu, but it’s too bad Silva is the Gene Kelly of kicking everyone’s ass.

Yes but college football teams play every week. Also at the end of most seasons there is always a few teams that should have played each other for a true national championship. Sorry I'm just in favor of a college playoff system.
