Werdum out of UFC

Quote:
Following a rocky time in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, capped by a surprising knockout loss to Octagon newcomer Junior dos Santos at UFC 90, Chute Boxe fighter Fabricio Werdum has left the promotion.

Sources tell MMAWeekly.com that Werdum's exit comes on the heels of a failed contract renegotiation following the loss to dos Santos. The Brazilian came into the fight with the expectation that he would soon be contending for a heavyweight title shot.

The knockout at UFC 90 derailed anything of the like in the near future, and spurred a renegotiation of his contract. Werdum and the UFC were apparently unable to come to an agreement. He has already opened talks with other promotions in the U.S. and Japan.

After losing his opening salvo in the UFC to Andrei Arlovski, Werdum put together back-to-back impressive victories with TKOs of Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera, effectively positioning him as one of the top contenders in the promotion's heavyweight division.

Current champion Randy Couture faces Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 on Saturday and interim heavyweight titleholder Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira defends against Frank Mir on Dec. 27 at UFC 92. The winners of those two fights are expected to fight in early 2009, as a unification bout to the UFC mini-tournament.

Had Werdum taken care of business against dos Santos, he was expected to be in contention to face the unified heavyweight champion later in the year. Now it appears he will be moving on to another promotion such as Affliction in the U.S. or Dream or Sengoku in Japan.

Lame.

So much for some potentially great fights. Hopefully he goes with Affliction, since the Japanese promotions have lackluster HW divisions

As much as it sucks I don't blame him. He was getting shafted and deserved a title shot. Maybe he will be back one day, but I doubt it. I predict he will go to Affliction

yeh i heard about this....werdum was off their HW list earlier...wow....there was this rumor going around sherdog about how some guy who worked at the venetian said their was an investigation going on about this fight about 3 large bets placed on dos santos just before the fight simultaneously and how they may have thought it was rigged......it's more than 99% bs tho....

damn...another great HW lost.....

I read this and a little horn in the back of my head went " wah wah wahhhhh."

Sucks, the HW division doesn't need to be losing talent like that, even if he did show some apparently bad judgenemt in his last fight / run-up to the fight...

The UFC HW Division is not going to have the 10 ranked HWs in the world, but they do have the up and comers.

Lesnar
Valasquesz
Carwin
Dos Santos
Al Turk

Add in Nog , Mir, Couture, Gonzaga, Kongo, and Herring and you have a decent division.

This is much better than it was in the start of 2008.

I understand why Werdum was not getting any love in the UFC. He lost a boring fight to Arlovski and the fans never got behind him after his two wins over Gonzaga and Vera. Then he gets KTFO by a relative unknown.

At the end of the day, you have to have some marquee value to excel in the UFC. There are plenty of fighters that have this problem. Okami, Machida, Jardine (albeit it is getting better for him) are all examples of this. Deserving fighters that get over-looked because they do not have the appeal of some of the past headliners.

MMA is a sport, but it is run as a business. Until it becomes a mainstream, network sponsored sport, the UFC will always have to consider the bottom line. Couture vs Werdum @ 350k buys or Couture vs Lesnar @ 700k buys (potentially more)?

This sucks, but we may get to see Werdum against Barrnet, Rizzo, Fedor, Arlovski 2, Sylvia, Overeem, Cro Cop. Doesn't sound so bad eh? Okay maybe not Arlovski again

Always supporting:
Forrest
Machida
Wandy
Velasquez

Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones is the best match-up the UFC has ever been able to arrange. Here's to hoping it goes down.

Thumbs down

Werdum is a top-tier fighter with tremendous grappling skills, is more deserving of a title shot than half the guys in the tourney, and has been finished a grand total of ONCE in a career where he has faced some very dangerous opponents.

The UFC brass should be doing whatever it can to retain high calibre competitors like Werdum, instead of letting him jump ship. Just because the HW talent pool is starting to deepen a little doesn't mean they can afford to lose one of their best.

It's all about the PPV buys, though. When it comes down to dollars-and-cents LESNAR > WERDUM.

My milkshake brings all the girls to the barn.

MOO!

A loss for the UFC but Im sure Werdum probably wanted more money then his drawing ability really warranted.

At the end of the day its Werdum's own fault for letting himself get KO'd by a relative nobody. Its hard to market a guy who people wernt really feeling already after he gets put to sleep in the worst way.
