Catone Looks To Spoil Ultimate Fighter
Nick Catone will get his chance to play spoiler when he steps into the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 91. He will be taking on The Ultimate Fighter season seven winner Amir Sadollah. This will be Sadollah's first fight since the reality series finale, so there will be a lot of eyes on this fight.
Speaking recently to MMAWeekly Radio, Catone expressed his excitement to debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. “I'm looking forward to getting in there. All the training and stuff is kind of getting me that itch to get in there.”
Not many fighters get the chance to make their debut on the main card against a top name opponent. Catone feels very lucky to receive such an offer. “It's definitely a big opportunity. I always watched the UFC growing up and that was definitely my goal once I started,” he reflected. “I never really planned on it.”
Catone is a former NCAA Division 1 wrestler out of Rider University. Unlike many other young wrestlers, he didn't shy away from jiu-jitsu. In fact, he embraced learning it with one of the best jiu-jitsu practitioners in the world, Ricardo Almeida.
“(When) I first started, I got caught in pretty much everything,” explained the New Jersey native. “I think that's just how you learn. My jiu-jitsu level is pretty good right now. I'm a purple belt in jiu-jitsu now. I roll with guys like Ricardo Almeida and Jamal Patterson. I have good training partners. Just rolling with these guys all the time, I just pick it up.”
Sadollah may be the bigger name on the card, but Catone is the one with more experience. Catone is the current Ring of Combat middleweight champion and is undefeated going 5-0 in his career thus far. He has a lot of tools that could prove useful against a fighter like Sadollah.
Catone knows that Sadollah has some dangerous striking and is preparing for whatever will be thrown at him. “He's definitely dangerous off his feet,” he said. “I've been training a lot on my feet and stand up. I'm not the type of guy that likes to study too much film. I like to focus on what I'm doing. I like to find out what the guy likes to do. I feel like if I watch too much film on him, then I'm defensive waiting for something to happen instead of using my game plan.”
Winners of The Ultimate Fighter show have a record of 9-1 in their first fight following the finale, so the odds are in Sadollah's favor. However, the fighters who have won the show all have significantly more experience, which could work into Catone's favor. Sadollah is a fairly inexperienced fighter and that is perhaps what made him such a unique winner on The Ultimate Fighter.
Catone gives Sadollah a lot of respect and does not take him lightly at all. He knows he's supposed to be the stepping stone, but that doesn't resonate so well with him. “I definitely give him a lot of respect. He beat some tough guys in that show. I'm just hoping to get in there and stay after him. I just want to prove I'm no pushover. He's definitely the more known guy. Nobody really knows me. I'm coming out of a small school from New Jersey just looking to make a statement.”
id give amir the slight edge in this fight, and im gunna be rooting for Amir all the way
