Even if all BJ did was throw jabs all fight, he sure laid the beating of a lifetime on Sherk bad enough to end the fight at the end of the 3rd.

Make all the excuses you want for Sherk, BJ was the better fighter and Sherk had nothing for him. Sherk has underrated striking but it doesn't touch BJ's.
sherks striking was wretched in that fight. Not that it's something special on any previous occasion.

Beating a guy who fought like shit when he's beaten better strikers on the feet shows improvement how?

I'm pretty sure this is going to head in circles and I've said all I need to say. I think everything I've said will be backed up by a domination by GSP in January. Shortly followed by an epic battle between GSP and Thiago Alves where GSP's rein of terror over the WW division will come to an end (short lived as it may be.) .

This fight goes to a decision, which GSP wins; due to having a better game plan.

Of course BJ can win; GSP can win as well. They are considered 2 of the top 4 p4p fighters in the world.

Everyone knows what each fighter brings. It could come down to who makes the 1st mistake.

I think the biggest factor is conditioning and the fact it is a 5 round fight. Add GSP's size, strength and takedowns and I think BJ's best chance to win is to overwhelm GSP early. BJ has to come out aggressive and get GSP backing up. If not I think he is in for a long night.

GSP got the takedown in the first fight; unless stopped early he'll get it in this fight. By round 3 it might be an easy takedown and by round 5 it might get ugly. I don't see BJ winning the late rounds.

BJ hit Sherk with a lot of shots and it took a flying knee at the end of the 3rd to stop him. By that time GSP will get a takedown and start wearing BJ out.

I think GSP will win by decision or tko BJ late in the fight if he gases.

Both fighters have a lot of ways to win though so it could easily go either way. What a great way to start off 2009.

So it is a 170 lb title fight? I thought it would just be an exhibition or something that went 3 rounds. That really would mess things up as far as title shots if Penn had both titles.

Alves has less chance than BJ to beat GSP. Eventhough Alves TDD improved, I see him spending most of the fight on his back, eating elbows and knees.

GSP made Fitch his bitch the same way Fitch made Alves his (while ago but still). It's just scary.

what do you mean 'but still'? alves was really young when he fought fitch and had almost no tdd....that fight was tailor made for fitch to win...but oh how times change....alves defending a clean shot from kos in the 2nd round along with many other instances when kos was in a td position.....

alves is a completely different since then...he's got a bb in bjj, improved wrestling and his striking is better also

alves has a great chance against both gsp and i think he's a favourite against penn

i just don't get the no love for alves....even still....he was +250 underdog against karo....ko'd him (made me 100 bucks yay)....was an underdog against hughes, tko'd him....was a slight underdog against kos.....beat him decisively....

NEWSFLASH PEOPLE: his victory over kos was more dominant than gsp's over kos....stop giving him no chance against gsp

I think BJ has better odds of finishing the fight then GSP does, if this fight goes to a decision I can see GSP winning but I dont see him either subbing or knocking out Penn, you ask can BJ beat GSP I ask you can GSP beat Penn because I dont think he can finish him and Im not sure he'll survive 25 minutes with him either, everyone acts like BJ has to gain weight and balloon up like Werdum to compete at 170 but I think BJ will show up in shape and motivated, Babalu is fighting at 205 even though he could easily make 185 and I think BJ will do the same just showing up in great shape at his natural weight, he walks into the fights at 155 over 170 there is no reason BJ just cant skip the weight cutting the day of the fight step on the scale and go into the fight 100% with no fatigue from the weight cutting.

Kos had what, 2 weeks to prepare for that fight? How long did he have to prepare for GSP?

im sorry, but although i am a firm believer that Alves deserves a shot at GSP over Penn, i do see GSP beating him..

Shogun is my homeboy.
