money....and it was kinda silly at this point...the UFC is pushing all of these megafights out at once, brock vs. randy, gsp vs. penn 2....both gsp and penn needed to establish themselves as champions before this fight should have happened....is it a great fight? yes, but badly timed....as far as i'm concerned, bj hasn't even really defended his belt and gsp has done so once....and the title contenders are getting anxious..now the UFC was forced to push Florian into a fight with Joe Stevenson which is a very very stupid fight.....even tho Florian should beat Joe soundly, what if Joe wins? a rematch w/ bj isn't interesting at all and florian is out of contendership for a few fights....and now Alves has to sit out and have a 8 or 9 month break....it's bad time

the same exact reason BJ has gotten every championship fight he's ever had.
He climbed a volcano in Hawaii and found satan then traded his soul to him for a career in MMA.

Because A BJ will keep calling GSP out and and talking about the fight to any media outlet that would listen till he got it, because BJ is a former WW champ, there last fight was a split decision after 3 rounds and BJ is widely considered the best LW in the world. Uhmm did I mention its BJ Penn, if you think he isnt gonna play the same game to get at Anderson if he beats GSP your kidding yourself, I will guarantee if BJ's contract is close to over I could honestly see him forcing Dana to give him a shot at Anderson guaranteed in his contract, like him or not few people have the drive to prove themselves at the top of the world as BJ penn the guy would fill in for Randy at UFC 91 this weekend if Dana offered it to him today.

Because he's BJ. I asked this same question when he got promised a title shot after his fight with Jens and now It's to the point where I just don't take the UFC title that seriously. I mean the UFC champion isn't the best fighter in the world in their weight class. They often aren't the best fighter in the UFC in their weight class.
Now personally I would say that BJ, GSP, and Anderson are all clearly the best at their weight class. However GSP was clearly the best without the UFC title and BJ didn't need the UFC title to be the best at 155 he just needed fights at 155.
Anderson could give up the UFC MW title and still be considered the best at 185. It's not about the titles it's about the best fighters.
When promotions control titles, match ups are based off money instead of who's the best and the title IMO means nothing.

I'm just copy/pasting what I already told another person on this forum:
Title shot for BJ makes the most sense because #1 and #2 contenders in the division are Penn and Alves (not in order) and right now beside these 2, noone else in the division could "claim" for a shot. Alves definitely earned his shot after UFC 90 only and not earlier (failed to make weight against Hughes..). Anyway he wouldn't be able to be healed and ready to fight GSP within 3 months. So it only leaves us with BJ to fight GSP next. Who else do u see getting a shot? Kos is #3 to me but will eventually earn it if he wins his next fight.
Last thing, don't forget the UFC is a business and PPV predictions mostly if not only drive main events and title shots. GSP/Penn 2 for title, after a very close first fight sells way more than GSP/Alves which imo will happen late summer 09 if GSP beats Penn, assuming he'll get Silva after Penn.

How in hell is BJ a contender with 2 loss in his last 2 WW fight ? I dont buy that BS, BJ cried like a baby until he got his shot, thats all.
I see Penn being handled by Fitch, Alves & KOS. Even A.Silva is not a contender at LHW even with his skills, even with his quick victory over Irvin.
I see the UFC having 2 measure in their system. In the end its all about money and 2 guy getting screwed over (Alves and Florian)

Fitch just got his shot so his out for a little while.
imo Kos will earn it after his next fight + GSP made him his bitch not a long time ago.
Alves earned it after his win to Kos and will definitely get it after Penn. If Alves made weight against Hughes, I think they might have considered him before Penn, but who's fault is it if he didn't?

Silva could get his shot @ 205 in 2009 if we wanted but he stated he didn't want to be on Machida's way + if he wanted a shot, he'd have to fight Lyoto or his friend Wandy (assuming he beats Page) before, fights that none of them would accept. Brazilians are just like that I guess.

That's what I think and said many times: PPV drive title fights/main events. But again, is the UFC (a business) the only one to blame here? What about us the viewers, that are more or less willing to purchase PPV only depending on how bad we wanna see this or this fight? Who drive PPVs thus fights? Don't you think MMA fans are to blame even more?
If we really were interested in watching fighters that deserve their shot as much as we are in watching "big names" facing each other, the system would definitely be different. Everything relies on us. I'm actually thankful to the UFC for understanding this system, understanding how we behave as buyers, making money and staying in business because I can't see them going out of business too. What would we have left???

Why dont people realise this is the reason the UFC has been so successful! Because they provide the biggest fights that will make the most money so the UFC can continue to grow!
Besides.. how can any real fan not want to see BJ vs GSP just because of a few fighters being hard done by. I mean are you fans of MMA or fans of "lets gives equal opportunities and make sure everyone is happy!"
