Chuck Liddell vs Anderson Silva UFC 95 fight possible for main event Feb. 21
http://mmamania.com/2008/11/16/chuck...-event-feb-21/
Quote:
UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva (23-4) could take another break from the 185-pound division and trade leather with former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell (21-6) in a special 205-pound match up in the works for the UFC 95 main event, according to The Sun. UFC 95 was actually just made official today for the O2 Arena in London, England, on February 21.
Liddell was supposed to collide with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 85: “Bedlam” earlier this year at the venue but injuries to both fighters forced them off the card, leaving British fans feeling a bit empty after shelling out their hard-earned Euros to see the “Iceman” headline a show.
Perhaps this is the promotion’s way of making up for that unfortunate situation.
The match up, if it happens, will more than likely be a little bitter sweet, considering Liddell has lost three of his last four fights — he’s no longer the same fighter who dominated the division for two years up until 2007. Nonetheless, he is still a huge draw and a very popular fighter who is very capable of putting on a great show.
Liddell was most recently on the wrong end of a vicious knockout at UFC 88: “Breakthrough” courtesy of Rashad Evans. Before the loss, he had his sights on getting back in the title hunt after a thrilling unanimous decision win over Wanderlei Silva at UFC 79: “Nemesis” on December 27, 2007.
By the time he next steps inside the Octagon Liddell will be 40 years old.
Silva has been unstoppable ever since he made his UFC debut in 2006, rattling off a ridiculous eight-fight win streak. He has not gone the distance, or beyond the third round for that matter, in any of those fights. “The Spider” essentially cleaned out the division and has now begun considering and taking fights 20 pounds north of his middleweight division limit to keep himself challenged.
In fact, he thrashed James Irvin in his 205-pound debut via first round technical knockout at UFC Fight Night 14 this past July.
Silva most recently defended his 185 title against Patrick Cote in a bizarre bout at UFC 90 last month, which ended when “The Predator” went down with a freak knee injury and could not continue. Before the collapse of the Canadian, Silva was bouncing, dancing and perhaps showboating, resulting in a negative reaction from several fans and critics.
He’s eager to get back in the cage to remind everyone what he’s capable of … and Liddell could be the man that Silva takes out his frustration on if the bout comes together, which is not the most envious position to be in for Liddell.

I think Chuck should get Silva after 2 wins or at least one. He really can't afford to loose again.

Wow, Chuck REALLY needs to work on keeping his hands up if he wants to take on someone as quick, accurate, and powerful as Silva.
Cant see this fight happening any time soon

Wow! I can see why Dana may not like this fight.
I personally think that Silva's next opponent is going to get thrashed, Liddell included. Leaving Dana with one o his biggest names on a bad losing streak including a loss to a guy who fights 15 pounds lighter than him. And as for his winner, possible retirement plans?????
Yeah, not a good fight for the promotion if you ask me, all though I would love to see it as a fan.

if chuck wins he will instantly be back in the title picture. yet if silva wins he'll pretty much be in the same place he is now. everyone will say beating the chuck of today holds no ground, silva will have to beat a true contender..
this is going to be an awesome fight, and we'll be guaranteed a tko finish. i think silva will force chuck to be the aggressor and get a ko on the counter.
but if this fight is at ufc 95, that means we'll have to wait a while for the next middleweight title fight. if okami gets through lister he should be next in line.

The moving up and down divisions isn't going to help Silva, he said it affected him coming into the Cote fight as he had to put on an extra 15-20lbs before cutting for the LHW match with Irvin.
He needs to either move up permanently or clean out the new contenders in the MW division.

this is going to be very boring.
2 counterstrikers backing up the whole time.

When 2 counterstrikers face each other, one usually becomes the striker. After Liddell's mistake with Evans, I highly doubt it will be him. In my opinion, Silva will advance on Liddell and probably KO him in the 3rd. That being said, I think this is an excellent fight for Liddell to take. If he wins, he's catapulted back onto the top. If he loses (one "O" by the way), he'll take another huge paycheck and retire. Win, win I think.

It is a way for Chuck to get right back on top in one fight, seeing as his stock has been affected with the recent losses. If he loses nobody is that surprised, it is a good fight for him i think. As for Silva it would do his 205 campaign no harm in beating a former champ and big name that is still just about credible (before he develops whats called Shamrockitis.)
It is a fight that has benefits for both guys, it will be easy for UFC to sell, and it would be a guranteed KO.
