HAHA, now this part had me laughing aloud to myself.

I've made the mistake of calling him "The Phenom" once, but never the protege.

All I can see when I think of the word protege is a crappy car made by Mazda.

I'm not sure bj has more tools. Bj has better hands in striking, but gsp has a wider arsenal of weapons on the ground, especially his kicks. on the ground, bj has the edge in bjj, but gsp has a clear wrestling advantage too. Plus gsp's jits aren't that bad. I'd say in terms of tools, i think its even and i'd almost say i'd give the advantage to gsp.

I understand what you mean about him 'dominating' the fight. You're basically saying GSP is turning into the Forrest Griffin, and doesn't finish guys.

I hope BJ shows why he's the Protege and I think he will!

It's gonna be a SICK fight.

Just my thoughts.
I can maybe give you the koscheck fight, but common, the fitch fight was a war... To be fair, i think gsp has had much tougher opponents than what bj had to face since their last fight. And as sad as it maybe, the "forrest griffin" strategy is the new strategy that many successful mma fighter's use because it works (i.e. griffin, ken flo and machida). its just part of the evolution of sports, when people are too good to be knocked out, you got to win by scoring points.

edit: whoever neg reped me for saying kenflo, i was referring to the roger huerta fight.

in response to the op, I do think gsp would be better for the sport for this reason:
gsp is a new wave of mma fighter
- what i mean is his style is so unlike many of the past dominant fighters. I think he resembles the modern mixed martial artist. He is one of the few fighters that utilizes the biggest mix of fighting styles in one fight. He shows decent striking (karate), and strong take downs (wrestling), good ground and pound, and excellent passing ability (jitz). There are definitly others that have a great array of fighting styles, (silva, bj) but rarely do you see these guys use all these styles to fight one opponent (i.e silva tries to finish on the ground and rarely takes his opponents down now) A good example is gsp's fight against serra 2 where whe litterly dominated him in every aspect of mixed martial art.

bj also has knockout power he just does not throw allot of his punches with it, he more likes to be very technical.

I am not saying gsp or bj will when but to say these things about gsp that you did is idiotic. I know you are a fan of his but come on.
thats the best thing ive read on here so far i couldnt explaine it any better myself! gotta rep ya for that 1

Now you're just saying things that make no sense. He's absolutely worked everyone he has ever fought except Matt Serra (in the first fight) and BJ. Just because you don't finish someone doesn't mean you aren't making them look terrible the entire fight.

BJ's a great fighter, one of my favourites, but you need to take his balls out of your mouth. The last two fights he has had, he has been the heavy favourite to win. He hasn't faced another guy as well-rounded as himself since his loss to GSP at welterweight.

Once again, what? GSP has finished 2/4 of his opponents, even then the fights that went to decision weren't even close. He outclassed each of those 4 guys in EVERY aspect of MMA.

BJ's not the protege, he's the "prodigy".
talk about nuts in someones mouth...? bj penn has fought solid competitors his whole career hes one of the best all around fighters in the world p4p. and so is GSP neither one of them is going to walk threw the other so people need to quit day dreaming on both sides

I like both fighters equally, as mixed martial artists they are the guys I use for inspiration in my own training. I'm just pointing out the inherent bias of the first post with counter-points that indicate that stylistically Georges is just as well-rounded as BJ.

I love how all these noobs are calling me a nuthugger, etc. In a few months, if you actually stick around here, you'll realize how faulty your original perception of me as a poster is.

You are confusing things. Fedor>all was saying the same thing you are, that it is going to be a close fight. It was the guy that he was arguing against that was arguing for Penn to dominate GSP.

F>A's point was that the fact that Penn finished his last couple fights doesn't compare to GSP not finishing his last couple of fights because the quality of fighters are not equal.

Pulver and Stevenson are not as good as Koscheck and Fitch. Therefore, to argue that penn is better because he finished his fights (because he gots mad skilz) is not valid.

BTW, F>A would never cheat on Fedor by touching another fighters nuts

Also, that Pick of Penn in Hawaii made me almost pee myself.

the thing about this fight that does annoy me is the fact that in many ways many lw contenders are getting the shaft (read KEN FLO) because they are just waiting there for bj to finish his fight with gsp. I wouldn't have as much problem with it if bj walked through most of the competition in his division (ala a.silva) but he has only one title defense and there are many intriguing fighters in the lw division that pose a threat.
