Jorge Gurgel cut from the UFC, signs with Strikeforce

Quote:
11/26/2008 – Within minutes of being released from his UFC obligations, Jorge Gurgel signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce out of San Jose, California.

Coming off a tough blow for blow unanimous decision loss against Aaron Riley in UFC 91 which won “Fight of the Night,” Jorge was issued his official release letter today from the UFC. Immediately Jorge was offered a contract with Strikeforce under undisclosed terms.

When asked about his transition from UFC to Strikeforce, Jorge said “I am very very excited to part of Strikeforce and given a chance to fight new blood and capture a belt. UFC has been my family for a few years now but I am ready for the next chapter. There are some amazing contenders in my weight class including Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez. I will do whatever it takes to climb to the top of this league.”

Jorge, recently underwent surgery on his right elbow to remove a bone spur and expects to back in to training in a few weeks.

To prepare for UFC 91, Jorge travelled to Massachusetts to train with Team Sityodtong and Mark DellaGrotte. Jorge will continue to work with Mark into the 2009 season and hopes to get into the ring in first quarter ’09 on the main card.
Long overdue IMO

i really dont understand the hate for Gurgel. seriously there are worse records in the UFC. And if losing is what cuts you from the UFC and being an exciting fighter keeps you in the UFC. then the hate on him is purely hypocritical.

Gurgel 3-4 UFC

Wandy 2-3

Sakara 4-4 UFC

That Wanderlai comparison is bs and u know it, he's 1-1 for the time that matters

You could make the arguement that guys like Sakara do actually try and fight correctly, which gurgel's record may not be stellar, im saying he got cut for the reason he fights. If he's so good on the ground, then why risk it and not try to take it to the ground. Hence, it can be argued that he is not taking the fight game seriously enough.

Its the same as Lutter in a sense, Lutter may've lost to the number 1 and 2 MW in a row respectively, which people have no problem with, as people didnt expect him 2 win. But the fact that he didnt make weight in the A silva fight and gassed to the point where he couldn't do anything in the Franklin fight were reasons enough to get the chop.

You don't take the fight game seriously enough, you'll receive the chop

I don't understand why he always wants to keep it standing and get his face smashed in. The guy has even got students that are great UFC BJJ fighters for christ sake.

His fights are always boring. He trys to make them exciting by standing up, but he just fails. He needs to stick to what he does best and try to submit people. His record really has nothing to do with why most people don't like him, its his overall performance in the cage in my opinion.

who didn't see this happening? the guy was trying to do a Gonzaga and NOT go to the ground so he could knock people out, but unlike Gonzaga, he doesn't finish fights..

You could hear the frustration in Joe Rogans voice on hes last fight about how he wouldn't use hes BJJ in fights and i felt the same way..

the man had it coming to him unfortunately..

Shogun is my homeboy.

I'm just suprised it took this long. I STILL cant understand why he insists on trading blow for blow and not utilising his bjj. The guy must be insane

The worst thing is his standups awful and doesn't even make for exciting fights.

Gurgel is Andy Wang except he has better jitz and a big name fighter as a best friend.

It would be funny if he became Strikeforce champion. I would be happy for him, but it would still be funny.
