WEC 38 announced for same weekend as "Affliction: Day of Reckoning"
Cerrone earned his shot.
World Extreme Cagefighting announced overnight that its first event of 2009 will take place Jan. 25 -- one day after "Affliction: Day of Reckoning" takes place just 100 miles away.
"WEC 38: Varner vs. Cerrone," which airs on Versus (9:30 p.m. ET), features a main event between WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone, as well as a co-main event rematch between Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver.
The event takes place at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, which is a couple hours south of Anaheim's Honda Center, which hosts "Day of Reckoning" and a main event between Fedor Emelianenko and Andrei Arlovski.
WEC 38 will be held on a rare Sunday. Most events, including Wednesday's WEC 37 card, have taken place on Wednesdays.
Tickets for WEC 38 go on sale this Thursday, Dec. 4, and range from $35 to $175. The San Diego Sports Arena can accommodate up to approximately 16,000 spectators, though a smaller seating configuration will likely be used for the WEC event.
Varner (15-2), who defeated Rob McCullough for the title in February, goes for his fifth consecutive victory and second successful title defense. He most recently scored a first-round TKO victory over Marcus Hicks in August.
Cerrone (9-0), meanwhile, is 2-0 with one no-contest (failed drug test due to a diuretic) since joining the WEC in 2007. He most recently defeated McCullough via unanimous decision in a remarkable bout at WEC 36.
"I have a lot of respect for Cerrone, but I consider him just one more undefeated fighter that I have to put in his place," Varner stated.
Faber (21-2), meanwhile, returns to action for the first time since losing his WEC featherweight title to Mike Brown. The loss snapped his 13-fight win streak, which included a June decision victory over Pulver (22-10-1) in perhaps the WEC's biggest event to date.
"Jens is always ready to fight, he's a competitor, and I expect a tough battle, but I'm going to try to finish it this time," Faber stated. "I don't want it to go the distance."
Pulver most recently suffered a 72-second TKO to Leonard Garcia in November. It was his fourth loss in his past five fights.
By the way, has ANYONE seen the Cerrone/Razor Rob fight?!
Leonard Garcia should be fighting Faber. Who really wants to see Faber beat on a guy who has lost 4 out of his last 5 and who he has already beat once ?
????? What are you talking about? Leonard is on a winning streak right now. And him and Faber have never met in the cage. And if they did, i'm not so sure Faber would just "beat on him" either. But Faber is supposed to be matching against Jens Pulver, and Leonard probably won't match again until Mike Brown puts up the title.
