That depends a lot on the strategy BJ or GSP would use against him but Alves showed he can handle a good top position grappler in Kos even though Kos did not try to many takedowns. Anyone with the overall standup game and power (especially kicks) and also has a solid ground game can beat anyone. I do think GSP/BJ would both eat him alive if they did get top position though.

another point i forgot to mention is jon fitch beat thiago alves via strikes round 2. Everyone said GSP would have his tough opponent in jon fitch yet he dominated all rounds! I love thiago because he's such a beast, but i could see him being outmatched by GSP or Penn.

That was long time ago and Alves is a way more accomplished fighter today (especially TDD and striking wise).

lol that wasnt necessary but yeah your point is correct, Alves also lost to Spencer Fisher when he came in but he is a much improved version of the old guy who came into the UFC.As of now he is an Elite level guy who is going to be hell for anyone to beat especially on their feet. And dont give up on Shogun just yet lol

and he will when he heals from his injury. If he faces forest again, he will destroy him... yes, i will take a sig bet from anyone.

my point is that yes of course he's much improved, but so was jon fitch.. they both had two years to improve.. Would jon fitch still beat the alves of today.. maybe but they would match up pretty well...

Agreed, Penn is a different fighter now, than he was when he lost to Hughes. With Alves so good on his feet its possible he cud knock both BJ and GSP out, but i think both wud start as favourites, both wud look for the take down imo, and dominate on top.

I'm not quite sure what point your trying to make here. Penn was never hurt, or rocked, just frustrated at being caught in the salaverry position with a great wrestler on top of him. The fight was stopped because he was unable to intelligently defend himself. I cant see how this relates to Alves at all. . .

Have you even seen that fight??

I'd agree with Aaron that Alves would probably be a slight favourite over BJ due to his size and power, he'd probably be fighting about 25lbs heavier, and could really use those leg kicks effectively although I would definitely say that BJ has the better boxing as Thiago's hands have never really impressed me.

I think he'd be a slight underdog to GSP without so much of a size advantage and he might be the physically weaker fighter which he isn't used to but TBH he matches up pretty well with either if them especially with the TDD he showed in the Kos fight.

I'd pick GSP to beat him by either a wide UD or a late TKO/sub simply because Alves hasn't shown me anything that proves he can handle a complete MMArtist with GSPs athleticism.

Him and BJ is a close fight though IMO, I could see Alves coming in a little lighter to ensure his cardios up to scratch for five rounds. BJ's got an iron chin but Alves would probably wear him down with leg kicks and mabe stop him or I could see BJ beating on him and subbing him if he got him to the ground in usual BJ style ie TD, pass to mount, beat on him, take his back, beat on him some more and choke him out. Thiago's ground game's never really impressed me but we haven't seen a lot of it lately so it could have improved alot, which, according to his camp it really has.
