The GSP that Matt Serra beat was an unfocused and distracted GSP. The GSP that holds the title is the best GSP we've ever seen. Hes a re-focused, fine tuned fighting machine.

I see GSP beating Thiago with consistant td's and ground and pound. As for BJ, I can't say whether he'd take it to the ground or not. If he does I think it's no contest....Thiago got triangled by Spencer, granite that was like a year and a half ago, but I still think BJ wins by sub if the fight goes to the ground. If BJ stayed on the feet I think he would get beat but probably not finished.

GSP would prolly just eat the leg kick and take him down instantly anyway.
I think BJ and GSP would both beat him standing anyway. Alves is not all that spectacular. I mean he's badass and so is his style, but Chris Lytle was beating him for most of the fight on his feet, he nearly got KOed by Derrick Noble, and Kos got a few good hits on him, I don't think BJ and GSP are in too deep with this possible matchup honestly now that I think about it. Not to say Alves is shit or anything though.
I think Alves is a little over hyped right now cuz he has such a badass style and look to him. Just my opinion.

to be fair to thiago, kos must have expected them too....being an orthodox fighter and all, it leaves taht leg exposed....thiago's leg kick technique is so fluid that it leaves almost no room to anticipate...
for instance...if you look at the big leg kick he landed against kos...there's a reply of it after the fight....most fighters twist their left foot say 45 degree's to get some pivot when they throw the kick...it's a slight 'tell' if you will what whats coming....every fighter knows this...however, if you look at the reply, thiago is so good that he can start the kicking motion and in the midst of that, twist his foot, finish the kick, and untwist, all on one leg.....compare this to a decent leg kicker...like say tyson griffin against sherk....
nobody has been fast enough to counter his leg kicks well....saying bj or gsp would do it, would be a first...not saying they can't, but i don't think it'd be likely

Alves does have an awesome leg kick, however GSP is very quick also and will prob train for that pretty heavily. I say GSP by UD.
IMO BJ will hold him off for the first round maybe even the second, but eventually Alves will wear him down and get the decision.
I may be wrong, but didn't Alves fail a drug test recently and fail to make weight once recently? If so that shows some instability in his training regime and could be a factor too.

alves failed a drug test at ufc 66 ...he tested positive for a drug that helped him cut weight....and he missed weight at ufc 85 b/c he sprained his ankle 10 days before the fight and couldn't do much in terms of being able to lose the necessary weight....
i don't think it shows instability in his training...fighters get hurt...gsp was supposed to fight at ufc 63 but got hurt...it happens to everyone...

Alves is a very strong welter, he handled Koscheck in a far more physical manner than GSP did.
GSP will not want to trade with Alves he wont want to risk a KO from somoeone who is probably the strongest striker in that division, so is GSPs ground game better well without doubt it is , Alves vs GSP i see GSP taking the fight via GNP resulting in RNC, however although Penn is a superb fighter i think Alves has a better chance of winning just through physical dominance.

I actually think that he has a better shot against Georges St. Pierre than BJ Penn.

He has good leg kicks, I'll give him that. But how long did Kos have to train for their fight again?

2 weeks....the same that alves had to train for kos....kos was already training for yoshida and alves was training for diego...kos was supposed to be a worse style matchup for alves and alves still pwned him
