Holy hell, Hardonk vs Sanchez was a blast. Eddie Sanchez will never be a contender, but the guy has been in some fun fights, and this was definitely fun. These 2 punch each other in the face a lot, and Hardonk busts out some cool shit like nasty leg-kicks. Sanchez got totally whomped in the second round, which was pretty cool. These are the type of fighters that Hardonk should be facing. Crowd was digging Hardonk, too.
Taylor vs Liaudin 2 was pretty good. Liaudin's pretty underrated, but mad inconsistent, while Paul Taylor is the best striker at 170. This was the classic match-up: Striker vs grappler, though Liaudin has some striking. I really liked the reversal Taylor pulled off in the first, and his ground defense has gotten much better. Taylor kept getting back up to his feet, and once he continues to get better on the ground, he could be a force. Liaudin gets dropped in the first and goes for an armbar. Great stuff. Goldie sounded legitimately excited. More of the same in the second and third. Close fight, but I scored it 29-28 for Paul Taylor. Legit FOTYC, and one of the best fights on the show. Big Dan The Retard Ref accidentally raises Liaudin's hand.
Damn, Luis Cane is the freakin' butta. Lambert's no chump and he straight up beat the hell out of him. He out clinches Lambert and outstrikes him. Scary beating. Cane vs Jardine would be a blast. Poor Jason, he just can't get back into his groove.
Wow, poor Roan. He got subbed by a BJJ bluebelt. That has to be embarrassing. Roan looked like he took Burns lightly, and paid for it. Burns is pretty damn tough, but man, it sucks to see Roan lose in embarrassing fashion. I still think Roan will be something, but he has lost his last 2 fights. A move to the WEC would be cool.
Oh yeah, Wiman vs Tavares was the goods, but what a sad, sad ending. Tavares got brutally KO'ed. I thought that Tavares was going to beat Wiman by decision, and I was wrong about that. Wiman's a damn good fighter, though, and was pretty underrated coming into this fight. What a battle. They do cool shit standing and on the ground. This needed 3 rounds and a Thiago Tavares win. Still, really fun fight.
Kampmann looked good. He was coming off a long layoff, and outgrappled Rivera. Kampmann's striking is overrated, but his ground game is solid, and is better than his striking. Rivera's a tough fighter, so this was a nice win for Marty Kampy. Kampmann gets his back, then goes for an arm triangle and then a guillotine. Cool shit.
I don't care what anyone says, Werdum vs Vera was a good stoppage. Vera was eating punches and was not getting out of the mount. Big Dan The Retard Ref messes up a lot, but he didn't mess up here. Werdum's takedown's looked good. It's nice to see him setting things up and committing. Vera's a solid wrestler, too. I really liked Werdum's passing and his mount. Vera loses another fight, and his stock goes down. It's still down. What happened to the guy? He used to be solid, now he just looks meh. Sadly, Werdum never got his title shot. Instead, he got to face an unknown and got KO'ed in saddening fashion. Poor Fab Doom, always a bride's maid, never a bride.
Okay, I don't get why people hate Leites for the Marquardt fight. It's not his fault that Nate cheated. Leites hits really hard, and manages to drop Marquardt. I love Leites' passing and mount. Nate is no slouch on the ground, yet Thales got mount. Yeah, Nate was rocked, but still. Marquardt then tags Leites late in the first. Really good fight here. Nate must've been really frustrated, because I've never seen him cheat like this. I like Marquardt's top positioning. Nate's ganso bomb, while cool, is not allowed. FOTYC, totally.
I really thought Davis was going to whomp Swick, but that didn't happen. I bet bbjd7 pissed his pants with joy after seeing Swick beat a really solid fighter. Davis is rocking some swanky shorts. Swick looked a lot better here than in the Burkman fight, so I'm convinced that he was just trying to get used to fighting at 170 in the Work Man Burkman fight. Nice top positioning from Swick. I don't know if Swick was just fighting a smart fight or has changed up his style. To Davis' credit, he never stopped fighting. Not the most exciting fight.
Bisping looked good. That move to 185 did wonders. He totally smoked a solid fighter, and looked good doing so. He won fans over with this performance. Bisping looks more explosive at this weight.
I hate watching Hughes lose, and he definitely lost. He got whomped. This was a total beating. Hughes couldn't take Alves down, so he pulled guard. That didn't work, as Alves pounded him. Holy shit, Alves is huge. He's so much bigger than Hughes, and lost some fans by not making weight. He lost them, and then gained them back by destroying Koscheck. Oddly enough, Kos won fans in the Alves fight, despite losing. I don't know what happened to Hughes, but he just hasn't looked like himself. Maybe the guys he's fighting are getting better and he's not evolving, but the Hughes of old would've slammed Alves down. Nasty knee from Thiago and Hughes is dead. Impressive performance from Alves, who has been unstoppable ever since losing to Fitch. I hope Hughes whomps Serra and then retires. As a huge Hughes fan, I don't want to see him take anymore beatings.
Really good show, with 3 really good fights, 2 of them being FOTYC's. This card was cursed, but it managed to be solid in the end.
