UFCThe Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a U.S.-based mixed martial arts organization, recognized as the largest MMA promotion in the world. The UFC is headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada and is owned and operated by Zuffa, LLC. This promotion is responsible for solidifying the sport's postion in the history-books.
UFC is currently undergoing a remarkable surge in popularity, along with greater mainstream media coverage. UFC programming can now be seen on FOX, FX, and FUEL TV in the United States, as well as in 35 other countries worldwide.
Dave Meltzer reports on Wrestling Observer Radio and in his latest newsletter (subscription required) that Anderson Silva has informed the UFC that he won't be ready to fight by UFC 95 in London. This leaves the UFC in a really bad position, as they once again have a London show where they have to scramble for a main event, and it's hard to think of anything they can come up with for a show that is scheduled for PPV.
That is the short term story, the long term story is Anderson Silva's status with the UFC. It's very clear to me that this is not a time issue, just a few months ago Anderson wanted to be fighting all the time. It's obvious that Anderson had no interest in fighting guys like Luis Cane or Thales Leites, and he appears to be more interested in boxing training than fighting guys on that level.
What can be done for Anderson Silva at this point? The middleweight division is a mess, none of the potential fights are marketable, and it sounds like he isn't interested in fighting unless the fight is a big fight. There are obviously 185 options all over the world that would be interesting to hardcore fans, but Anderson seems to be only interested in doing big fights.
He's pretty much cleaned out the ufc's mw roster. I don't blame him for only wanting big fights, ppv buys are probably part of his contract. The only prob is that there just aren't a lot of big name MW's right now. He should just move to 205 and clean house there. There are fight of the year possibilities for him all through that division.
and that's just off the top of my head, enough to keep him busy ktfoing big name dudes for 2 years at least.
Weird. A Silva always wanted to fight/fought every 3 months and his last fight against Cote wasn't even a "fight" as they barely exchanged. Thought he got pretty frustrated with the way things went and wanted to fight ASAP so why isn't he ready to fight again?
This sucks... I don't think this is the stance he should be taking - I just wanna see him fight.
Also, his next fight will def not be against BJ. BJ simply isn't big enough for 185. He'll never fight there. Dana has gone on the record as saying this. GSP, on the other hand is a possibility...
Winner of GSP/Penn will be facing Alves first, so unless A. Silva wants to wait another 6/8 months, he should go for someone else for his next fight.
I also heard Dana White's comments about not letting BJ move to 185 etc. but between what Dana says and what he does... And trust me if BJ beats the hell out of GSP, then beats Alves and defends his title against Florian, all this together unlikely to happen but still a possibility, the fans will want him to fight Silva at MW and Dana will make the fight happen.
This is too bad. UFC 95 seems to be having some real trouble considering it's 2 months to the event and they have no main card fights unless Hardy vs Markham and Etim vs Buchholz is main card material in there minds.
I mean UFN 17 has 4 solid fights annouced and this has none.
