Alves vs Swick is possible

http://mmaweekly.com/blog/index.asp
Quote:
After a very impressive performance dispatching of Jonathan Goulet at the UFC "Fight for the Troops" show on Wednesday night, Mike Swick vaulted one step closer towards a top contender's spot in the welterweight division, but could his next fight involve a shot at Thiago Alves?

The speculation begins with Alves, who defeated Josh Koscheck in October, but as the #1 conteder for the welterweight title he would likely sit out for the better part of 8 or 9 months waiting for the winner of GSP and B.J. Penn to be ready to fight again after their Jan 31 showdown.

UFC president Dana White said during a "Q&A" session on Tuesday that Alves would be facing the winner of GSP/Penn, but a fight between Swick and Alves could be a big fight for early 09'.

Rumors of the fight began to circle almost immediately after Swick finished off Jonathan Goulet, and a fight against Alves was the talk in Fayetteville following the event.

Alves spoke to MMAWeekly Radio after his win over Koscheck, admitting that it's very tough for him to stay out of fights for very long.

"I don't really know because that's something inside of me that I can't stay still for too long," Alves said. "I have to punch somebody, I have to get in a fight."

"I don't mind waiting, I don't mind doing another fight, but my manager and my camp don't want me to fight. They want me to fight for the title, so whatever they want me to do."

Stay tuned to the MMAInsider as more information becomes available on this potential fight.
This fight makes no sense for Alves at all but as a Swick fan I would love to see it happen because it would be for the title shot.

Thoughts?

I think Mike's height could be a factor he is about 2 inches taller then anyone Alves has fought in the UFC.

Alves should be fighting for the title and nothing else right now but he got put on hold cause of BJ Penn's match making, poor guy. Alves shouldn't take the fight and just train all the longer for his title shot, hes going to need it.

This is kind of like when Chuck fought Babalu. If Alves did this it would make no sense at all. If the fight went down I would say Alves by KO or Swick by decision if he could make it an up down fight but I think Alves would be too much for him and Swick probably doesnt have the offensive wrestling necessary to put Alves on his back.

Pointless fight, and Alves would definitely win. I don't see any way Swick could beat him

Only way for Swick to win is to be faster, much faster.

rubber match against AKA....alves would probably work him standing...height doesn't matter as much when your a leg kicker and swick's got some thin legs just waiting to be destroyed...

Seems like the Fitch Alves rematch would make more sense than Swick vs Alves though, doncha think?

there isn't anybody in the division that could fight alves and make sense...he's the CLEAR #1 contender...

i couldn't care less tho...let alves fight him and destroy him, it'll only boost his reputation..i just want to see alves fight...i don't care who it is...it only gives him more time to work on his jitz and wrestling for a fight w/ gsp/penn

Ya but at least he has a loss to Fitch, and Fitch just loss to the champ. Fitch vs Alves just makes much more sense than Swick vs Alves, but I agree that he is the clear #1 contender.

I agree but if GSP vs BJ is a war and the winner is hurt Alves might not want to sit out till August/September.
