Jason MacDonald is fighting Wilson Gouveia on Saturday on The Ultimate Fighter Season 8 finale card at The Pearl at The Palms in Las Vegas. Watch him fight live on Sportsnet shortly after 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
It has been almost two years since my last fight in Las Vegas, but I'm back. I arrived late on Tuesday since my flight was delayed. We always travel on Tuesday and I typically take that day off from training. But since my flight was later, I was able to train in the morning at my gym in Red Deer. So instead, I made Wednesday my day off.
The only thing I did on Wednesday was a little run to get my blood flowing. I try to do that every night at about the same time that I will be fighting on Saturday. So I went down the gym at about 6:30 p.m. and used the fancy treadmills they've got here and then sat in the sauna for a few minutes. My weight was about 198 pounds which is right where I wanted to be.
On Thursday I got a little more of a workout. I did some pads and ran on the treadmill for three five-minute rounds. I got a good sweat on and got my weight down to 189. And I have to say my timing is awesome and I feel fantastic physically.
Mentally I feel great too. One thing I've come to realize is that in order to have a good fight, I have to go in with a calm, relaxed mind.
When we were in Atlanta the last time for my fight against Jason Lambert, it was just my trainer Josh Russell and I all week and we spent a lot of time by the pool and had no distractions. I went into that fight really relaxed and I performed well.
My fight before that against Demian Maia, for whatever reason, I went in a little uptight. I thought a performed well but not the best. For some people they have to be angry and pumped up to fight, but not me.
Even against Joe Doersken, even though I won, I didn't think I fought the best. It was in Montreal and there were lots of distractions and of course I was angry at Joe. Yeah, I finished him, but it wasn't my best fight.
That's why I feel so good for this one. There haven't been any distractions, it's been really low key and quiet. I did my interview for the UFC on Wednesday and that was about it.
And there's one more thing that may work in my favour. As it turns out, I won't be headlining the event -- I'm the second fight of the main card. But that's good for me. In my first fight in the UFC against Ed Herman I was the second fight, and I won that one pretty quickly. So here's hoping that happens again.
