Here's a decent interview with Kalib Starnes. For Canadian posters, I got the article from canoe.ca (i.e. the online Sun papers). It's got a miniscule fighting subsection in the sports pages - but every now and then there's something good there.

Starnes' comments about his TUF3 experience solidified my opinion that Ken Shamrock is a woefully bad coach. If you recall how Starnes mentioned his rib was FUBARed in his fight with Groves, you might also remember Shamrock saying that Starnes wasn't really hurt (because he knew what broken ribs looked like). Turns out Kalib was in worse shape than he let on.

I liked Starnes - it's too bad he lost recently in his UFC undercard fight. Hopefully, he can come back.

Thank you so much for the link to the article. I heard Kalib was hurt badly but man that poor guy - he's a fighter for sure to deal will all that and keep fighting.
As for Shamrock - truly he was a very poor coach on the show - it was often hard to watch and I felt really bad for all the guys on his team as he just wasn't there for them. But on a positive note - I believe after he watched the footage he saw how poorly he behaved and seems to have humbled himself somewhat.

I wish Kalib all the best - go Canadians!

Hmm OH YEAH! I remember that fight when Shamrock was like "I know you rib is hurt but you got to keep fighting". He probably made him hurt himself more. That ass.

Very true - he was a bad coach because he didn't give a shit. He was very focused on his own goals. I would have to blame Dana for that - he should know these guys enough to know if they could put aside their own agenda to be a benefit to the fighters. Tito did a great job as a coach - he earned my respect from that show 100%.

I'd say there's a big intersection on the Venn diagram. It's hard to be a good coach if you don't care about your fighters or the job you're doing.

Either way, his fighters didn't benefit from the exchange.

Kalib was one of my favorites to win the show, and I truly believe he'd be the Middleweight winner of TUF3, had he been on Team Punishment. You could tell the lack of intense training on Team Shamrock really hurt their guys (see Hutcherson gassing against Rory and being knocked out with a ridiculously terrible kick).

By the way, BadHabitBabe, Vancouver isn't too far out of my way if you know what I mean.
