Gilbert Melendez mulls move to UFC

ďI have one fight left with Strikeforce. Right now, Iím really happy with themÖ. There is the possibility I could stay there with them, but I donít know, we will see how it goes. The UFC has always been a big dream of mine. The UFC is a great organization. I love that show. But MMA is a business now and I have got to make sure things are in my best interest. The fighter in me wants to just go to the UFC and just go test myself with everyone. Iím under contract right now part of my contract is we cannot discuss it so I wouldnít do that. But I hope and believe they are interested. Itís something I would consider. At the end of the day Iím a fighter and I have a life so I have to do what is in the best interest for me.Ē

Ė Top-ranked lightweight and former Strikeforce 155-pound champion, Gilbert Melendez, talks about a possible move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) once his contract with Strikeforce expires. In the meantime, the talented 26-year-old Cesar Gracie-trained mixed martial artist is clamoring for a rematch against Mitsuhiro Ishida. Melendez ó along with training partner Jake Shields ó are highly coveted free agents (sorta and almost, respectively) who could make find themselves competing inside the Octagon in 2009 sooner rather than later. However, Strikeforce is currently the only promotion to have a relationship with a major national broadcast network (NBC), which could be an ace up its sleeve heading into the New Year. There is a real possibility for fighters to get insane exposure to a massive nationwide audience if the promotion can grow its partnership to include live shows on the Peacock Network. Thatís the business side of things.
Great addition to a great division if they can snatch him up after his contract with strikeforces finishes.

I find it hard to think that he can be a champion one day though, I used to think he could, but after that Josh Thomson performance, I was put off a bit. Ishida also had his way with him, as I think the top wrestlers in the division will do.

Josh Thomson is a guy I want to see in the UFC. He should never of been out of the UFC in the first place, that one loss to that crazy Yves Edwards Knockout.

Fedor fights I want to see..

Fedor vs. Josh Barnett
Fedor vs. Randy Couture
Fedor vs. Tim Sylvia - DEMOLISHED
Fedor vs. Andrei Arlovski - DEMOLISHED

hmmmmm, i wonder how many become reality..

Sadly, the UFC did away with the LW division after that great Edwards vs Thomson fight, which caused the Punk to go elsewhere.

Thomson's the man. Him vs guys like Griffin and Florian would be bonerriffic.

Melendez should've been in the UFC a while ago. It wouldn't shock me one bit to see him go there after he fights his last Strikeforce fight. Let's hope that it's against Ishida again.

Ishida should be in the UFC, too.

Melendez is a good fighter but the blueprint to beat him is out there already.

He was a top 5 LW now he's not even close to top 10 really.

It shows how amazingly deep the LW division is.

Melendez would lose to Frankie, Griffin, Sherk, and BJ no doubt.

And probably lose to Guida, Huerta, Florian, and other guys with strong wrestling skills.

Gilbert is good but he won't be a top UFC LW unless he improves a lot.

He would probably beat his boy Nate Diaz though that's a great match up for him.

Yeah, I can see all those guys except Huerta beating him. Guida came close in their first fight, and he's gotten much better. Melendez is pretty much the same fighter. Dude still throws wildly, but he can put on a strong pace. Sherk would eat his lunch, as would Penn, though that's not a knock against Gilby, since Sherk and Penn are the 2 best in the UFC LW division and are head and shoulders above everyone else.

Melendez could have some fun fights in the UFC, but he'll never be a contender. Maybe after Tavares vs Manny, we could see Thiago fight Melendez. Probably not, but I want it.
