Rampage says he didn't ask for Silva, but he'll take it

In our recent talk with him, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson said it wasn’t his idea to take on Wanderlei Silva in his first fight back in the UFC since losing his title in July. The fight he asked for? A rematch with Forrest Griffin. The UFC, apparently, had other plans for him.

“Fighting is my job. That’s how I look at it. I didn’t ask for Wanderlei. I wanted a rematch with Forrest. But I don’t get to pick my fights. I fight the ones they give me, and they’re giving me Wanderlei.”

After everything that’s happened, Rampage seems more convinced than ever that he deserved to win the fight against Griffin.

“I still think I won that fight. I was the champ, and I think I did enough in that fight to stay the champ. You’re supposed to have to take the title away from the champion, and he didn’t do that. Even though it goes down on my record as a loss, I feel like I won that fight.

“I don’t see how anyone could give him that first round. I don’t know how a guy can get dropped and win the round. The judges must have been picking their noses or something, but I still feel like I won.”

Jackson was hesitant to comment on the situation that led to his split with Juanito Ibarra, but when asked about Tito Ortiz’s claims that Ibarra had been overcharging him for training camps, Jackson responded, “That was the small part of it. That was just one little thing he did.”

He says he hasn’t spoken to Ibarra since their split, and doesn’t intend to because “he’s just not a good person for me to be talking to.”

As for how the media spotlight coming into UFC 92 might affect him, coming off a loss and very public legal troubles, Jackson was quick to play down the extent of the pressure, particularly when it comes to winning and losing.

“This is why I miss Japan. American fans need to understand that there are no losers sometimes. Two guys go in there and one’s got to win and one’s got to lose. Every fight can’t be a draw, but if they both fight hard and do their best, there are no losers. Japanese fans understand that. American fans, they just want to be on your side when you’re winning. I don’t worry about what people think about me. I’m a fighter. It’s my job.”

I agree with Rampage that some fans want to be on your side when your winning but I don't think all of us are like that.

Definitely that is why I think Japan has better fights sometimes. Guys will go and give it their all and win the fans even if they lose the fight. It may not be the best gameplan but at least in Japan if you are exciting they keep you around and dont drop you after you lose one or two fights

Rampage is right, there are a number of fairweather fans out their in mma. I'd be interested in seeing what happens should Machida lose a couple of fights, i don't think he would get half the backing he currently has.

If Silva raped me with knees, I wouldn't want to fight him again either. I really want to hear what Juanito did that was so awful.

When I first read the title I initally thought that Rampage was mentally beaten by Vanderlei already but reading through the entire thing gives me confidence in him.

I tried to dig up the dirt on the split with Juanito but to no avail.

He is still whining about the loss to Forrest (which btw all 13 people in my house thought he lost before the judges cards were read) which shows his head is messed up in my opinion. You dont get a rematch when you lose right away. You do what the other champs had to do and work your way back. And thinking you should have an advantage in scoring just because you are the champ is stupid. I think he is in for a rude awaking come fight night with Silva.

I've picked Rampage to beat Silva, possibly by decision. I came across an interview with the Wolflair's head coach, and he said that he's got a similar plan for Rampage that they used for Bisping against Leben. If Rampage fights a smart fight, picks his shots, and takes the fight to the ground where he can work some GnP, he could very well beat Wanderlei.

As an official card carrying member of 'Page Nation, I'm pulling for my brother all the way. But even casual analysis shows that Wanderlei has the clear mental edge.

Verdict: Wanderlei by knockout.

Not only is he saying he won the fight, but he'd probably also tell you he is innocent in regards to his legal trouble too. Denial.

I can't always muster a lot of respect for Rampage the person, but Rampage the fighter is highly entertaining and definitely a crowd pleaser. I hope he gets a clear head and is mentally ready for the fight. Even though I'm pulling for Wandy, I want Wandy to beat Rampage when he is running on all cylinders, mentally and physically. I hate to see anyone go from champ to rockbottom, so I do hope Rampage pulls himself together in all aspects and remains a force in the UFC for a long time.
