Well that's debatable.

He's definitely the best in the UFC, but Roger Gracie and Marcelo Garcia are 1 and 2 for me.

Chieck Kongo has some nice arm bar attempts. If Kongo wasent around though i would have to say Maia.

Roger is probably behind Garcia Maia Jacare IMO. And I heard a rumor that Maia never lost a BJJ match except to Gacrica, not sure about it's validity but honestly he is better then Gracie.

I would put Jacare, Marcelo Garcia, and Roger Gracie above Maia for sure. If you look at straight up accomplishments, there are a handful of guys who have done more than Maia as well. Maia also won ADCC the year that Jacare didn't compete, and has not done as well in the absolute divisions as others. He also hasn't done as well in the Mundials.

Quote:
Roger Gracie:

ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championships

ADCC 2007
Superfight championship: Defeated Jon Olav Einemo.

ADCC 2005
88 - 98kg: 1st Place
Openweight: 1st Place

ADCC 2003

Record of opponents:

*Won: Justin Garcia (sub), Eduardo Telles (sub), Xande Ribeiro (sub), Alexandre Ferreira 'Cacareco' (sub), Shinya Aoki (toe hold), Fabricio Werdum (sub), Xande Ribeiro (sub), Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza (Rear Naked Choke), Mario Sperry, Rigan Machado, Xande Ribeiro, Jan Olav Einemo. (pts)

*Lost: John Olav Einemo.

Marcelo Garcia:

ADCC 2003

Lost: Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza (Kimura), Marcio 'Pe De Pano' Cruz, Robert Drysdale (Anaconda Choke)

Ronaldo 'Jacare' Souza:

ADCC World Submission Wrestling Championships

ADCC 2005

Openweight: 2nd Place

ADCC 2003
77 - 87kg: 2nd Place

ADCC 2003 Brazilian Qualifiers
77 - 87kg: 1st Place

Record of opponents:

*Won: David Belkheiden, Robert Sulski, Dennis Hallman, Demain Maia, David Avellan (6-0), Alexandre Ferreira 'Cacareco', Marcelo Garcia (Kimura), Ryan Gracie , Matt Lindland, Ricardo Cachorrao,

I would say BJ Penn has the best guard but all around BJJ I'd say either Maia or possibly Ricardo Almedia, I would love to see Almedia/Maia just to answer the question once and for all, who ever said Anderson Silva is dreaming Anderson isnt even in the top 3 in the MW division.
