You are overlooking Nogueira's MMA BJJ. Maia would handle him in a pure BJJ match, but Nogueira's MMA BJJ is great. Maia's a total stud on the ground, but he wouldn't handle Nog on the ground with ease in an MMA fight. It'd be a fascinating ground battle, but Nog would have the size advantage.

Penn does not have the best guard. His top positioning is excellent, but he is looking to get back up once he's on his back. Aoki's guard is something amazing, easily the best in MMA, but I'm getting a tad off topic.

That is such a gross underestimation of Nogueira, you should be ashamed of yourself for saying that, especially seeing as Jason MacDonald made it to the third round with Maia in a total ground war.

How would you determine BJ has the best guard in MMA when he's never finished a fight from there? He's great defensively, but come on, even Kevin Burns has more submission wins from his back than Penn.

BJ's top game is arguably the best IMO, with the best guard either belonging to Nogueira or Maia. Palhares has some really explosive BJJ as well.

BJ hates being on his back in MMA so you can't say he has the best guard IMO. His top game is definitely top 3 in all MMA though.

Agree with Damone about Aoki's guard but if we're talking strictly UFC then I'd go with Maia as the top BJJ fighter TBH.

BJ may not submit guys but it is very effective at helping him avoid damage, if your talking about submissions then yes others may have more offense from there guard but BJ's guard is very effective for him. Also didnt BJ submit Pulver from his back in there second fight? (I could be wrong havent seen the fight in years.)

Roger, Garcia, Jacare before Maia.

Jacare beat Maia at ADCC, which is pretty much No Gi BJJ.

Honestly, he is not better than Roger.

Anyone that overlooks Aoki's guard when talking about the best guard in MMA is a fool. That guy is a freak of nature plain and simple.
