Jason MacDonald picks UFN, weighs in on GSP-Penn

Jason MacDonald

First off I want to say I had a great time in Las Vegas. I had a lot of Canadians and people who read the blog say "hi" to me and I loved meeting a lot of new people. Of course the fights were great and I hung out with a lot of new people that I hadn't before. It was one of my most fun trips to Vegas I've had in a while.

And I'm really happy that I'm such a horrible picker and Georges St. Pierre pulled out the win. I was pretty disappointed with B.J. Penn. I expected a lot more from him. I'm not making any excuses for Penn but he wasn't the same B.J. who fought Sean Sherk six months ago. He looked more like the B.J. that fought GSP the first time. And actually not even that good. We had this big fight that had all this hype and Georges came in 100 per cent prepared while B.J. looked like he was half-assed prepared. We didn't see a great Penn and the only person we have to blame for that is Penn himself.

But it's also unfortunate that it has been overshadowed by this whole Vaseline thing. I don't think GSP's people intentionally put it on him to cheat. The key thing is it was still getting on his back. The guy who was rubbing Vaseline on his eyes was the same cornerman who was in charge of doing the "energy massage" and it just so happened that the Vaseline was getting on his back. I'm sure it was unintentional but at the end of the day it was still happening.

Did it have a big impact on the fight? Absolutely not. But the fact is there was Vaseline getting on his back you're not allowed any. It's unfortunate that his victory -- such a dominant victory -- was tainted by that. His camp can say there wasn't much getting on his back. But it doesn't take that much Vaseline to make a sweaty guy become super slippery.

Now it looks like there will be a rematch, though I don't see the outcome being any different. I thought maybe B.J. had a mental edge, but that wasn't the case. GSP's physical abilities were just too much.

I would love to see that fight again, as long it's with a 100-percent-prepared B.J. Penn. And it has to happen, even if the outcome likely won't be any different. Because there's always going to be those people saying, "If Georges hadn't been greased up, things may have been different." There's always going to be that doubt if you don't do it again. It's a black cloud over the match.

Having said that, I would be way more excited to see B.J. Penn battle Kenny Florian and GSP fight Thiago Alves than to see St. Pierre vs. Penn 3.

With last big's card and this week's news, this weekend's fight night has kind of flown under the radar. But here a few picks.

Joe Lauzon vs. Jeremy Stephens

Though Stephens looked good in the last fight, he wasn't fighting a guy of Lauzon's caliber. I'll pick Lauzon, especially since Stephens took this fight on short notice.

Cain Velasquez vs. Denis Stojnic

I think they're definitely grooming Velasquez to be a contender. They're bringing him on pretty slow, giving him match-ups to build him up. I think this is a fight where he is certainly the more-skilled athlete, so I expect him to win.

Mac Danzig vs. Josh Neer

This is a very interesting fight, definitely a potential fight of the night. Neer never disappoints. He's always game to fight, win or lose. I don't think he's ever in over his head. He can always hold his own. That being said, Danzig is a pretty-skilled fighter, so it's a tough one but I'm going to pick Neer.

Luigi Fioravanti vs. Anthony Johnson

Johnson is a huge guy for 170 pounds. And I love Luigi. But I think Johnson is too big and just a little bit better at stand-up, so I'm picking him, even though Luigi is one of my favourites.

Kurt Pellegrino vs. Rob Emerson

I like Pellegrino, he brings it to every fight. I'll never forget seeing his lip getting cut and watching him stick his tongue in there and then sticking it out for three rounds to pull out a win. I like Emerson too, but I'll pick Pellegrino as I think he has the edge on the ground.

Gleison Tibau vs. Rich Clementi

Tibau is a huge 155-pounder, probably one of the biggest out there but he always seems to run out of gas. Clementi's got tons of experience and always seems to hang in there. I want to say that Tibau is just too big for Clementi but it seems like he doesn't do enough to win so I'll go with Clementi.

Jason 'The Athlete' MacDonald is a Canadian mixed martial artist who fights in the UFC's middleweight division. He lives in Red Deer, Alta., with his wife Kelly and four children, boys Tristin and Keel, and girls Jett and True. He blogs regularly for Sportsnet.ca.

He lost all credit when he said Kurt Pellegrino was going to beat Rob Emerson.

i definitely feel the same way about the whole GSP/Penn situation, i felt like he stole a page out of my diary(not that i have one). We also share similar picks on the UFN outcomes minus the clementi vs tibau match-up.
