I wouldn't be surprised if the commission isn't just trying to get some money from the UFC and then this will all go away. Very strange that this comes up right when the tickets go on sale.

Oh, and a lot of people have commented that Canada awarded GSP the "athlete of the year" award. It's not like the government gave him the award, it was a fan vote on the web page for Rogers Sportsnet which is the second rate sports network in Canada. It's like BJ Penn getting awarded "US Athlete of the Year" by people voting on the Verses channel web page and suddenly everyone saying that he was the Athlete Of the Year.

I am proud to live in Canada. I am not proud that Quebec is part of Canada though...

You know the only reason they "forgot" about this last time was because it was their golden boy that was the main event. Now that he isn't they don't care and are being the bunch of nasally french men they are.

I too would be ecstatic if the UFC came to Alberta instead. Pretty sure they wouldn't have trouble selling tickets either.

Although it was a vote from Rogers Sportsnet, I would hardly call Sportsnet the second rate sports network in Canada, Sportsnet has 4 regional television stations and 1 national station, has multiple NHL contracts with each regional station, and the Rogers conglomerate owns the Toronto Blue Jays. Sportsnet also already has clearance for a Sportsnet2 channel which is partnered with Setanta sports.

TSN has 2 national channels....

I really htink a UFC event in Alberta would do well in Calgary or Edmonton, combining those two metro areas you have 2.2 million people and mma is really popular out here.

Does anyone know where else in Canada MMA is sanctioned? My guess is that's where this UFC is headed, though I still feel it might go to Boston or somewhere else in the Northeast or Northern Midwest. I simply can't fathom the UFC holding an event with Silva headlining but without elbows and knees. Given that he's file Thiales (not exactly main event material), holding this event would be ratings suicide and would further drive away Silva, who's already considering leaving the sport.

I work on my tan harder than I'll have to work on you!

Yeah, although I do like Sportsnet for the UFC and soccer that they show, if you compared the ratings for both channels I would guess (and it's just a guess because I don't have any stats) that TSN gets lots more views then Sportsnet. I can't imagine the traffic for the sportsnet web page is anywhere close to the tsn web page.

That's true, and you also got to factor in RDS which is owned by the same conglomerate but run seperately of TSN. A lot of the times RDS will break something before TSN knows about it. I just feel Sportsnet actually covers more sports than TSN.

This is bad for MMA in Quebec. Real bad.

So GSP's TKO of Serra was technically illegal?

HAHAHAHA. They will bring to Vancouver or Toronto the two bigger cities with a larger audience and more money before they ever bring it to Alberta, aka middle of nowhere in Canada.

Joe Rogan is doing stand up in Richmond, British Columbia which is like 20 mins from Vancouver and he's lobbying to the commission there to get UFC sanctioned there.
