Just thought it'd be funny to ponder. I have kind of wandered from bjj as that was what I was first enamored with in MMA. I don't think it would nessecarily be an entertaining bout but I wonder who the better bjj practioner is.
Maia would straight up **** him. Maia's BJJ is great. Royce's? Not so much. If you actually watch it, it's not exactly all that pretty. Pretty slow stuff, while Maia is so smooth. Royce couldn't even tap Takada.
Yup Royce wouldn't do well against other's who are great BJJ. Royce was chosen to fight because he was smallish and the Gracies wanted to show the world that BJJ didn't need size to be effective.
Yea it's all about Roger and Marcelo as 1 and 2 going nowadays. Jacare is 3 or 4 with Xande and then Maia is somewhere in the top 10. Not far behind though.
This isn't UFC related at all, but while Rickson is being brought up, how far do you think Kron Gracie will get in BJJ? He's only like 20, isn't he? Do you think he will ever transition to MMA?
It's not really a matter of opinion. Maia could have the best MMA BJJ, but in actual grappling competitions, he isn't the best. He's one of the best, but there are a few above him.
I don't usually like to rank them in order, but I actually have Roger above Marcelo, mostly because I just like him more. And Xande has to be in there somewhere. There's just so many great grapplers it's hard to rank them after the top guys.
Also everyone who doesn't really watch much grappling needs to look up Cobrinha. He isn't one of the very top guys, but he is very good and is really fun to watch.
bbjd, I was thinking recently about where Andre Galvao ranks and I can't figure it out. I mean he beat Werdum in ADCC and he just won the Mundials in 2008, but then again he loses to the guys at the very top.
Some people have Drysdale way up there about where Jacare and Xande are. Personally I think he benefited from a down year at ADCC and would have him along with Maia, Werdum, and Galvao.
Maia would beat Gracie easily, especially in an MMA match.
The game was evolved so much since then. Royce wouldn't have anything for just about anyone in UFC.
When Gracie started out in MMA, most fighters had very little submission knowledge. Everyone thought Kimo was a beast on the ground because he tested Royce, but he turned out to be pretty mediocre.
Royce could fight the big guys and beat them because he was so far along in submissions. Give him a guy like Maia, who is a great grappler and big and strong, and he gets mauled.
On another note, something about Galvao creeps me out.
My guess is that Royce would refuse to tap and Maia would choke him unconscious within the two first minutes of the fight, forcing the referee to step in.
