More weight classes?

Do you think that in time, UFC weight classes will be similar to boxing and more will be created? And how do you feel about this?

Wanderlei said he would like a 195 weight class created in an interview the other day and it just got me thinking.

I don't think there's any weight divisions that can afford to be broken up at this point. All they could really do is add a lower weight class but they want to carry WEC on the back of those guys.

I think if a 195 division came to be you'd see Anderson holding two belts and it would be like two versions of middleweight.

If I recall correctly Dana White has said in interviews that one of the main problems in boxing is the diluted weight classes, so I don't see more weight classes being added in the UFC.

I dont want anymore weight classes in the UFC although I do wish some of these start up promotions like strikeforce or Affliction would be smart enough to try and stagger there weight classes so as to create some interesting match ups not possible in the UFC. What I would do is have, 150, 165, 180, 195, 215, 215+ , I feel for a company trying to compete with the UFC it would be wise as youd have new match ups for UFC castaways but also have a great home for guys like Nick Diaz or Wandy who dont fall neatly into the existing UFC divisions.

I'm not sure if anyone else is on board, but I'd love to see a 145 lbe weight class in the ufc. I think enough lw can make the cut and I really think it would be exciting. IMO, guys like edgar or even griffen would be a much better fit in that weight class and i think with faber, brown, garcia and pulver the division can be very exciting. I don't see it diluting the lw division too much either since the lw division is so deep.
If ufc had 145 i could really even see more guys like torres or the full list of japanese rosters interested.
Although this would probably kill the wec though....

I dont think there are enough elite level FW's that are interested in fighting in the US to make a run at a FW division, the WEC has a lighter schedule to fill in and has more room for a slightly lower level of fighter.

new weight classes

I know that Dana is against it but I believe there needs to be another weight division above 205. A 60 pound weight differential is very significant - just ask Randy Couture. How can a heavyweight at say 215 or 220 really handle a guy like Brock Lesnar who CUTS to 265?

There are very few Super Heavyweights around so I wouldn't bother with that division but I believe that maybe 205 - 235 and then 235 - 265 is realistic.

John McCarthy recently commented on this in a recent interview and some of the athletic commissions are looking into more weight classes on the upper end.

the problem with your logic is that its not a 65 pound weight diffrence LHW dont actually weigh 205 pounds they weigh 220 + sometimes and then cut down, all these small disadvantaged HW's like Randy choose to fight at HW when they could make LHW, they choose to fight bigger guys and then look for sympathy, I mean if you made a 235 pound cut off every single HW could make it except Lesnar and Carwin.

The only weight classes that need to be put in are those below 155 (e.g. Bantamweight and Featherweight) and a weight class between LHW and HW. A weight class with a range of 60lbs is just ridiculous.

Toxic: First off, I don't remember Randy looking for Sympathy. Second, you are right about the weight cutting, but that doesn't mean that a 60lb weight difference isn't ridiculous. The only problem with splitting the weight class in half is that it would make Brock's(the current champ) weight class almost completely empty.

I don't know if it makes sense though to have a weight class with such a huge gap simply because it would leave out certain big names. With that logic, they might as well extend the HW division to infinity and get Butterbean and Sapp in there
